months ago, is released.
House and Senate Superfund conferees agree to support a five-
year $8.5 billion hazardous waste clean-up program that sets
standards for removal of deadly wastes and requires industry to
inform the public when dangerous chemicals are released into the environment.
The Titanic expedition is over and leader Robert
Ballard says that about 100 photos will be fitted
together for form a “photo-mosaic” of the broken
wreck and debris. Some 57,000 color photos and
hundreds of videotapes were taken of the sunken
ocean liner, which lies in pure darkness 2 ½ miles
down the ocean floor. The Navy paid for the
expedition as part of a five-year, $2.8 million
contract to develop deep-sea diving research and
exploration vehicles. But the Navy has no plans to
return.
NASA says the seven crew members of the space shuttle Challenger probably
remained conscious for at least 10 seconds after the Jan. 28 explosion and they
switched on at least three emergency breathing packs.
The Reagan Administration reports that Japan has agreed, just before a U.S

John Jenco says of his brother - Father Lawrence Jenco that Shia Muslim

Pepsico says it has agreed boy buy Kentucky Fried Chicken for an $850-million
cash deal.
Technology -
Third generation Compact Disc players, which are now being sold, are proving
to be unusually free of breakage and defects. When CD repairs are needed, they
can be costly. Most problems tend to be mechanical, not electronic. Topping the
list are defects in the assembly that moves the laser, either a sled or slider
mechanism and in the worm-gear drive assembly. Other problem areas are the
sliding-drawer mechanism. Less common are laser diodes failures. If you need
one, it will cost about $70.
Sports -
Holy Football - The National Football League is found guilty of violating an
antitrust law. The USFL had sued for $1.69 billion, but damages awarded - just
$3.00! The verdict came after almost two years of pretrial litigation and 2 ½
months of trial testimony. The decision discredits the NFL, but will probably doom
the 4-year-old USFL, which in its fourth year, planned to switch to fall play in
direct competition with the NFL, but without the established league’s television
revenue sources. The jury decided that not only does the NFL enjoy monopoly
power, but it also unfairly conspired to gain its competitive edge and did in fact
violate antitrust law - “to exclude competition within major league football.”
The jury could not conclude, among other things, that the NFL, as the USFL had
insisted, actually prevented the USFL from obtaining “access to a national
broadcast television contract.”

Many believe the USFL’s day are
numbered. Arizona Outlaws owner
Bill Tatham Jr. says, “Unless the
verdict changes, I think we’ve seen
the end, either this year, next year or
whenever.” Fred Bullard, co-owner of
the Jacksonville Bulls comments: “I
wouldn’t call us out until the last piece
of dirt is thrown on the casket, but
some very serious decisions have to
be made very soon. I would suggest
things are not the brightest right now.
Unless we pull a rabbit out of a hat, it
doesn’t look good for us playing this
season. Probably the only thing that
could salvage the league would be if a network talked to us for 1987, when the
NFL television contract runs out. I’m an optimistic person, but it’s hard to be
optimistic.”
