In the worst mass slaying episode in U.S.
history, James Oliver Hubert (41) picks off 20
people inside and outside a McDonalds
restaurant in
San Ysidro
, California - just
south of San Diego. As he entered the
restaurant, he was heard to say, “I killed
thousands in Vietnam, and I want to kill
more.” Most of the victims were killed within
minutes, including a boy on a bicycle in the
restaurant’s adjoining playground. Huberty was killed by police sniper when it
was learned he had no hostages. One man said he was just driving by the
location when “bullets just started flying,” shattering his windshield and right
headlight.
McDonalds Corp of Oak Brook, IL pulls all commercials off of radio and
television. “We are shocked and grieved by the tragic incident which took place.
It was a bizarre, isolated and very tragic incident. Our hearts go out to the victims
and their families and we share in their grief.”

- Miss America 1984 and the first
black woman ever to win the crown resigns under
pressure from pageant officials after nude photographs
of her appear in Penthouse magazine. The magazine
issue is selling at a torrid pace. “I never consented to the
publication or use of these photographs in any manner.”
With her announcement, Williams’ crown goes too the
first runner-up, Suzette Charles, Miss New Jersey.
At their convention in San Francisco - The Democratic
Party nominates former Vice President Walter F.
Mondale to run for President in November. Later on, Geraldine A Ferraro is
nominated as his running mate - the first woman ever to run for Vice President.
In a South Lawn ceremony attended by relatives of POW’s and former prisoners,
President Reagan announces that Laos has agreed to a joint excavation of the
site of a combat aircraft crash during the Vietnam War in an effort to find the
remains of some U.S. soldiers. “Four times in this country we have been forced
painfully and reluctantly to send our men and woman to fight in wars on foreign
shores.” “Some of them made the supreme sacrifice of their lives. Some others
made sacrifices in many way equally grave - they were imprisoned by the

enemy.”
The French Communist Party, dissatisfied with the
economic policies of the nation’s new premier,
announced that it is quitting the government of
Socialist President
Francois Mitterrand
and Premier
Laurent Fabius announces a new Cabinet to carry out
his economic policies to reconstruct industry.
Poland’s Communist government approves a
sweeping amnesty that is expected to free all of the
country’s political prisoners and end preliminary legal
moves against hundreds of other dissidents. The
move is viewed as an inducement for the West to
remove economic sanctions.
Steroids may cause heart disease ... A team of researchers at Washington
University in St Louis says that their research indicates that steroids reduce
blood levels in high-density lipoprotein (also known as HDL) ... HDL is believed to
help prevent heart disease by acting as a transporter to clear cholesterol from the
bloodstream.
Two Amtrak passenger trains crash head-on on a trestle suspended above a
New York City street. 125 people are injured.
Minneapolis financier Irwin Jacobs and four associates buy a 5.8% stake in Walt
Disney Productions for nearly $90.5 million. Jacobs is renowned for launching
takeovers and occasionally liquidates the companies he acquires. He says there
is no present intention to seek control of the company.
Tennis champ Chris Evert Lloyd is back with her husband John Lloyd after a trial
separation of nearly six months.
Dies - Jogging authority
Jim Fixx
(52), who wrote the best
seller “The Complete Book of Running” collapses and dies of
a heart attack while jogging in rural Vermont. Fixx thought
that running could help him avoid the hereditary heart
disease that had killed his father.

Passing -
Samuel J. Popeil
(69) - introduced the
Veg O matic and Pocket Fisherman to late night
television audiences across the United States. The
family was rocked by a conspiracy in 1974 when
Popeil’s wife, Eloise and her admitted boyfriend,
Daniel Ayres, were charged with trying to pay $25
thousand to two men
to kill Popeil. He said
his wife “wanted the
security of being a
married couple with the freedom of being a single
girl.” He said he knew of the boyfriend, but
because of his deteriorating marital relationship
“was kind of happy to have him take her off my
hands.” Sam and Eloise later remarried. His son
Ron continues the tradition with his “Ronco” and
its famous infomercials.
Jacksons' fans get a special treat in Dallas at Texas Stadium. Eddie Van Halen,
who did the guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s hit “Beat It” gets on stage with the
group and reprises his riff. Also in the crowd - Prince.
Retires - Quarterback Terry Bradshaw (35) who led the Pittsburgh Steelers to
four Super Bowl victories. “It’s not a one-year retirement. It’s forever.” Bradshaw
had been suffering a severe shoulder injury that limited him to one game last
year. He’ll work for CBS Sports as a commentator.
Chicago televsion station WTTW (PBS-Channel 11) becomes the first in the
nation to broadcast in stereo. PBS has been broadcasting many programs in
stereo including “Austin City Limits,” and “Live from the Met.” Some new
television sets offer stereo audio and most manufacturers will offer stereo
adapters if they don’t already. The FCC approved stereo TV on March 29.

New York - (Spring book)
Z-100
hits a high of 7.4 in the ratings! The station had
been off a bit - down to a 5.5 in the last book, after a 6.2 debut last fall. Rival
WPLJ also showed a nice increase as the top-40 station hit a 4.4 share.
WKTU falls to a 3.3, from a 4.0. AOR WNEW-FM is up to a 3.1, from 2.6. WNBC
is up to a 3.0, from 2.9.. Talk WABC is up to a 2.6, from a 2.3 WNEW-AM is up to
a 3.1, from a 2.9. Rock WAPP dips from a 3.3 to a 2.9. Country WHN is up to a
2.9 from 2.3. All-news WINS gets a 4.6.
In Los Angeles - Top-4- KIIS-FM jumps to a 9.7 share, from its former 7.8. Talk
KABC is up to a 7.6 from a 5.7. Top-40 KKHR is up to a 2.9, from 2.6. KOST is
down to a 2.7, from a 3.3, KIQQ lips from a 2.7 to a 2.6. KRTH (Oldies) - 2.8.

down to a 1.4.
In Chicago - WGN-AM leads with an 8.8 and Urban WGCI-FM is up to a 6.1.
WBBM (all-news) - 4.6. Easy WLOO - 5.6. B-96 (WBBM-FM) dips to a 4.6 from
5.0. WLS-AM dips to a 3.2 from 3.7 and WLS-FM is up to a 3.5 from 2.9. WCLR
(A/C) is up to a 4.1 from 3.4. Country WMAQ scores a 4.1. WLUP up from a 3.0
to 3.4. WLAK (Nothing but love songs) is down to a 3.2 from a 3.9.
Programmer Randy Kabrich resigns from Doubleday’s WAVA Washington to
form his own consultancy group.
Capital Cities buys Metromedia’s KLAC-AM in Los Angeles. They’ll continue to
operate KZLA-FM and spin-off KZLA-AM. Both are country.
WGAR-AM Cleveland goes country as FM sister KWKSW goes WGAR-FM. Jay
Clark is the program director.
