James Fletcher
announces that
the next space shuttle launching has been rescheduled
to early 1988 from July of 1987 because of delays in
redesigning the solid rocket booster that caused the
Challenger disaster. Fletcher also denied that the
Challenger disaster signaled the United States’ loss of
space leadership to the Russians.
In their experimental plane “Voyager,” pilots Dick Rutan
and Jeana Yeager break two international records by
flying nearly 12,000 miles and staying in the air 5 days without refueling. Both
emerged from the plane gaunt and dehydrated, but felt “great” despite
confinement in the cockpit. Jeana is not related to celebrated test pilot Chuck
Yeager
Officials of Wal-Mart stores pull Rolling Stone and other
rock magazines and record albums from their shelves
after evangelist
Jimmy Swaggart
criticized the sales in a
sermon last month. Swaggart said that he mentioned Wal-
Mart in a sermon delivered on June 1. That sermon was
broadcast in southern markets June 22; 10 days after
Wal-Mart circulated an internal memo ordering store
managers to remove 32 magazines.
For the first time in 74 years, a deep-sea camera gets its
first good look at the sunken Titanic in what the Navy
heralded as a major advance for marine science and exploration.
Sean Penn
is charged with battery in the
alleged punching of a musician during an
argument at a nightclub in Los Angeles. David
Wolinski (37), formerly of the group “Rufus,”
told police that Penn accused him of trying to
kiss
Madonna
as they were leaving the club.
The actor hit him on the side of the face, struck
him with a chair, kicked him and would have
thrown a piece of furniture at him if other
patrons had not intervened. The incident took
place on April 12.

A five-tiered 240-pound wedding cake and an identical
backup cake are delivered to Buckingham Palace for the royal wedding bash of
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson as the bride’s father attacked the media for
constantly “harping” about his daughter’s weight. Some newspapers have called
her downright fat. “She’ll be whatever weight she wants to be and what Andrew
wants her to be. If that’s not what the media wants, then it’s too bad...The point is
that Andrew fell in love with her the way she is.”
Louis Rukeyser
, host of “Wall Street Week” on PBS
challenges an IRS claim that he and his wife owe
nearly $500 thousand in taxes and penalties because
the IRS disallowed losses from some their tax
shelters. The alleged deficiency for 1980 grew out of
the agency’s refusal to allow the Rukeysers an
investment tax credit on master recordings that they
had purchased. The IRS says that the investment
was made with a motive of reducing taxes, not
making a profit.
