Week of July 17, 1970
On news of a stabilizing economy from the Commerce Department - stocks are
up with the Dow closing up for the week at 723.44. The official White House view
is that the economy should soon start growing again so that by the fourth quarter
of this year, the advance would be at an annual rate between 2 and 3%. Inflation
should be lower. The first half of the year - the consumer price index rose at an
annual rate of 5.6%, down from last year’s 6% (all of 1969).
All 721 passengers and crewmen
abandon the burning cruise ship
Fulvia , 100 miles north of the
Canary Islands safely. The ship
was last reported to be totally on
fire and listing. Most of the
passengers were either Italian for
French.
Vietnam - Large enemy forces move into the Siem Reap-Angkor region with
many nightly attacks in the midst of one of the broadest North Vietnamese and
Viet Cong drives so far in Cambodia... President Nixon meets with his diplomatic,
military and intelligence high command on forthcoming U.S. negotiating strategy
at the Vietnam peace talks.
Senator Edward Kennedy still fails to regain the high level of
popularity he had enjoyed prior to his tragic car accident a year ago
at Chappaquiddick Island. In the latest Gallup Poll survey - 25%
give him a favorable rating. Just before the accident - he had hit
49% in the “extremely favorable’ rating... In another Gallup Pole,
New York City mayor John Lindsay shows surprising voter appeal
when matched as a Democrat against President Nixon and Gov
George Wallace of Alabama. In the latest sampling - Lindsay wins
the vote of 29% of registered voters to Nixon’s 46% and Wallace’s
15%.
Six Arab Guerrillas hijack a Greek airliner and reject an offer by Aristotle Onassis
to serve as a hostage. Onassis first offered himself as hostage instead of the 53
passengers and then made a money proposal to the hijackers. Both were turned
down. So far, six have been released after the Greek government agreed to their
demands to free seven Arab prisoners.

New York State changes the name of
“Sing-Sing” prison to the Ossining
Correctional Facility after the town in
which it is located. Originally, Ossining,
NY was originally called Sing-Sing, but
the village changed its name because of
the connection with the prison and its
reputation for housing hardened
criminals. Ossining is approx 25 miles
north of Manhattan on the Hudson River. The state is in the process of calling its
10 prisons and reformatories “correctional facilities” to put emphasis on
rehabilitation of criminals.
In sports - Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants gets his 3000th hit - the 10th
major leaguer in baseball history to reach that number. Ty Cobb leads the all-
time hit list with 4,191... Dodger William Singer pitches a no-hitter in a game
against the Phillies. The Dodgers win 5-0.
Singer Eric Burden , formerly with the “Animals” has a new
group with War, and a hit that’s climbing up the charts “Spill
The Wine.” He has spent the last eight months rehearsing,
recording and touring with War, which consists of six black
musicians and a Danish harmonica virtuoso. “The new group
is the most talented bunch of musicians I’ve ever worked with
and that’s not just me hyping them.” Burdon has shifted his
home base from England to Los Angeles. He says he’ll be
introducing the group to English fans at the Isle of Wight pop festival next month.
Burdon says he likes Los Angeles, because it’s in the middle of the movie
business “and movies are still a big dream of mine.” “My first love is films and I
still want to get there. The knowledge that I’ve gained in the music industry has
been invaluable in teaching me a sense of timing and how to handle people. It’s
improved my outward and inward vision but I’m still trying to get to the one thing
that I want to do more than anything.”

Actor Dennis Hopper -34 (Easy Rider) says he
wants to appear on national television to refute a
claim that he used narcotics. “When they (young
people) read that Dennis Hopper can take heroin
and still write, direct and act in movies, they will get
the mistaken impression that heroin is not bad.” The
actor was referring to an article in Life magazine
which said he used drugs. “Man the only thing I
shoot up with is vitamin B12. My only habit-forming
vice is cigarettes. Hopper says he wants to appear
on the Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin and Dick Cavett
late-night talk shows to refute the story.
Singer Mama Cass appears regularly on the “Ray
Stevens” show on Saturday nights (on NBC). The
show is a summer replacement for Andy Williams.
She’s billed as Ray’s special friend. A recurring gag
sketch has her reposing on a couch while people pop
up from behind it with surprise one-liners. The show is
taped in Toronto.
