XM Satellite Radio is undertaking a nationwide soft-launch trial of its service,
involving teams of testers equipped with XM radios in more than 20 U.S.
markets. Using its twin satellites, Rock and Roll, the company will broadcast up
to 100 channels of digital-quality programming charging users $9.95 per month
for basic service.

Technology -
Hellos, NASA’s $15-million solar-powered aircraft that is expected to shatter
altitude records, begins its first flight over Hawaii. Powered by 63,000 solar cells,
the unmanned, remote-controlled aircraft lifted-of at 8:05am .
Microsoft says it will ship its new operating system, XP - without Java, the
popular programming language. Java programs are designed to run on any
operating system and Microsoft has viewed Java as a threat to its monopoly on
personal computer systems. Microsoft licensed the language then changed it so
that Java programs would run better with its Windows systems.
Dmitry Sklyarov , a Russian computer programmer is
arrested in Las Vegas for allegedly distributing
software that could be used to make copies of
electronic books. He is believe to be the first person
arrested under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act for
distributing a computer program as content providers
push federal authorities to crack down on those who
might duplicate copyrighted material.
A consumer watchdog group charges that eight major
search engines commonly used to find information on
the Internet are misleading consumers by not
disclosing the influence of paid advertising on search results. The sites are
iWon.com, Lycos, MSN.com, Netscape, Altavista, Direct Hit, HotBot and
Looksmart.
Amazon.com reports its 17 th consecutive unprofitable quarter. But, the company
says by the end of the year, it will show some profit.

Hip-hop artist Beanie Sigel (Dwight Grant) is charged
with kicking and punching a driver in Philadelphia.
Fab 5 Freddy, the original host of Yo! MTV Raps is
teaming with online music site GetMusic to launch the Fab
5 Freddy Show, an interactive hi-hop variety program later
this summer.
