U.S. backed rebels attack a strategic town in northern Nicaragua and 22 were
reported killed.
Testifying - John M. Poindexter said he never told President Regan about using
Iranian arms sales money for the contras because he wanted to insulate the
President from political embarrassment if the plan leaked out.
Former National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane
contradicts Lt. Col. Oliver North who had testified that he
always kept his superiors fully informed about his role in
the Iran-contra affair. McFarlane testified he never
authorized North to set up a military supply network for
the Nicaraguan rebels or to carry out a variety of other
activities related to supporting the contras and selling arms to Iran. He said North
had a “tendency for recollection to be colored by the way one would have liked to
have acted.”
Former National Security Adviser John Poindexter repeatedly challenging White
House denials insists that President Reagan would have approved diverting
Iranian arms sale proceeds to the contra rebels if he had known about it.
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, attempting to bolster President
Regan’s image amid the Iran-contra scandal revelations declares that the world
needs U.S. leadership now more than ever and that Reagan “is uniquely able to
give it.” She is visiting Washington DC.
National Security Adviser John M. Poindexter says
he refuses to apologize for his role in the Iran-contra
affair. He was reasoning to Republicans’ criticism. He
declared that he had conducted himself honorably as
President Regan’s national security adviser, that he
regrets nothing he did and that “I’m not going to be
apologetic about it.”
Rear Adm. John M. Poindexter’s testimony that he
never told President Reagan about the diversion of
Iran arms sale profits to Nicaragua’s contras
prompted a reaction from President Reagan -
“What’s new about that? I’ve been saying it for seven months.”

Lt. Col. Oliver North , the nation’s
newest television star, will soon be
featured on at least tow videocassettes.
The tapes, “Oliver North: Memo to
History.” And “t. Colonel Oliver North: His
Story, CNN Highlights of the Iran-Contra
Hearings” are being rushed to the
marketplace in an attempt to capitalize
on the enormous publicity generated by
North’s seven days of testimony at the
hearings.
Newsweek reports that Lt. Col. Oliver L. North leaked the very story he said last
week was leaked by Congress. In his testimony before the congressional Iran-
contra committees, North acknowledged intentionally misleading Congress abut
U.S. arms sales to Iran and diversion of profits to the Nicaraguan rebels. He
justified this deception by citing what he claimed were two leaks by members of
Congress of sensitive information - one case involving the U.S. attack on Libya,
the other involving interception of an airliner carrying terrorists believed guilty of
the hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro.
More Oliver North - Seen in Hollywood - Someone pulled the “H” off the hill and
everyone could see “Ollywood” as “Olliemania” is sweeping through the nation.
Apparently, someone covered the H, but it was an attempt to mock the whole
thing.
The Philippine government sues ousted President Ferinand E. Marcos and his
family for $22.6 billion in damages and says Filipinos suffered during his 20-year
rule, including 410 billion the Marcoses and associates allegedly stole.
Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton announces that he would not
run for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination,
ending months of speculation. Clinton, who is serving his
4 th term as governor, issued a release saying he and his
wife, Hillary, a lawyer, want to spend more time with their
daughter. He also said he did not want launch a new
campaign after having gone through 15 in the last 13
years. “I hope I will have another opportunity to seek the
presidency when I can do it and be faithful to my family, my
state and my sense of what is right. For the past six months, my head has told
me to enter this race. By my heart says no.”

Business - ZZZZ Best, the Los Angeles area carpet-cleaning firm under
investigation for allegedly being part of a money-laundering ring, has ceased
operations by order of its bankruptcy trustee. Los Angeles police announced last
week that the company and its founder, 21-year-0ld Barry Minkow were part of a
nationwide conspiracy to launder narcotics profits involving eight other people
and four other business. Minkow, who gained a reputation as a whiz kid
entrepreneur after beginning the company in his parent’s garage, resigned as its
president earlier this month.

Partyollah” in which the dog appears surrounded by beautiful
young women is one of the best-selling pin-ups in the country.

MTV this week.
Sam Kaiser of MTV elaborates on the channel’s “Hip Clip” -
“Hip Clip is a special rotation category, which allows us to help break a new artist
or band in a big way. In a perfect world, the Hip Clip would be played roughly
eight times per day, or 56 times a week, but that can’t always be the case…. The

official line is that there are three levels we look at when picking the Hip Clip.
There has to be a fanatical belief - both here and on the label’s part - in the
song, the artist and the video. The label support is especially important, because
if we’re going to commit this kind of airplay, we need to know they’re behind the
act. The Hip Clip artists are given preferred treatment, as far as new artists go.
We provide the VJ’s with fact sheets on them, so they can talk about the clips
and actively support these acts on the MTV news. We may also give them walk-
ons and gust VJ shots.
