white supremacist Benjamin Smith - shot himself fatally.
In Florida - a jury finds Cigarette makers liable for illnesses in a class action suit.
Ehud Barak is sworn in as premier of Israel. He vowed to forge a “peace of the
brave” with his Arab neighbors.
The Federal Reserve raises its key interest rate a quarter-point.
George W. Bush reports a record $36.3 million in campaign receipts.
In the French Alps - a cable car transporting workers to a high-altitude space
observatory becomes unhooked from its wire and plunged about 260 feet to the
ground - killing all 20 on board.
The government reports that hiring continues at a brisk pace -even though
unemployment inched up a little - to 4.3%.
General Motors is ordered to pay $4.9 billion for a 1979 car crash. A 1979
Chevrolet Malibu exploded after it was rear-ended in Los Angeles and the fiery
crash injured two women and four children who were trapped and burned. $4.8
billion of the amount was for punishment - and it’s likely to be appealed.
Rev. Al Sharpton and 74 other people were arrested when they converged on the
Atlantic City Expressway to protest racial profiling by state police.
Walt Disney Co. settles a bitter
breach-of-contract suit with
former studio chief Jeffrey
Katzenberg. Terms were not
disclosed - but some believe it
was for about $250 million.

AutoNation is on the movie - and will buy 16 new-car dealerships in four states
for $200 million.
Passing - Forrest Mars Sr. - entrepreneur who built Mars candy who bring you
M&M’s and Snickers. He was 95.
Passing - James S. Farmer - civil rights leader of the 1950’s and 1960’s. He was
79.
Passing - Mario Puzo - who created “The Godfather.” He was 78.
Technology -
Yahoo Inc has second-quarter earnings of 11 cents a share - well above
expectations.

UPN - with USA averaging 2.7 million viewers vs. UPN at 2.5 million. Pretty
amazing and it’s the first time this has happened in pop history. Duration was
