The Bush Administration orders 43 types of assault rifles, including the AK-47
and the Uzi carbine, be permanently barred from entry into the United States
In Warsaw, President Bush is greeted by

reforms designed to help push Poland

enterprise.
The Pentagon said it remains convinced
that a “star Wars” laser facility in the Soviet
Union poses a serious threat, despite the
fact that an American delegation visited the
site and concluded it to be ‘irrelevant.’
The House approves a measure that would
halt offshore drilling along much of the American coastline with the Bush
Administration bowing to growing anti drilling sentiment and abandoning an effort
to block the moratorium on the House floor.
The Senate approves a bill that would overhaul the nation’s laws in legal
immigration with an annual cap of 630,000 immigrants in each of the next three
years and opening the doors to more residents of Western Europe.
Mayor Edward Koch of New York says he will issue an executive order granting
bereavement leave rights to homosexuals and unmarried heterosexuals whose
“domestic partners’ die.

The Denver Nuggets become the first black-owned major professional sports
franchise as both Bertram Lee and Peter C.B. Bynoe purchase the NBA team for
$65 million.

On Saturday Night Live - Actor John Malkovich is
guest host with musical guest Anita Baker.
Get Ready - HBO is about to begin “The Comedy
Channel” this fall and MTV Networks will launch “HA”
early next year. Yes - two competing comedy
channels. HBO says its channel plans to have six to
12 comedy hosts or “comedy jocks” to introduce the
material and performing their own jokes. They’ll be
clips of comedy films, classic TV comedy shows, stand-up comedy performances
and full length comedy movies. The Ha channel will offer long and short-form
programming, sketch comedy, stand-up performances and movies and situation
comedies either made for HA or bought in syndication. They’ll be no comedy
hosts, but new comics will be presented on the network.

Music news -
The Rolling Stones hold a press conference previewing their upcoming “Steel
Wheels” album and played a brief excerpt from the song “Mixed Emotions” during
the conference at New York’s Grand Central Station. The conference was aired
live by MTV and FM radio stations. The conference announced their upcoming
North American tour which starts September 1 in Buffalo. It’s the first tour for the
band since 1981.
