Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says that it would be wrong to characterize
the situation in Iraq as a quagmire or a guerrilla campaign, despite suspected
sabotage and the growing number of attack on U.S. troops there.
Iraq - U.S. forces say they killed 11 Iraqis in battles with guerrilla-style fighters
who ambushed an Army patrol.
Campaign promise - President Bush proposes spending federal money on
vouchers that parents dissatisfied with public school could apply toward tuition at
private schools. The program would be the first of its kind.
As more U.S. military casualties are reported in Iraq - President Bush vows to
forge a military structure that will crush threats to American troops there.
President Charles Taylor of Liberia accepts an offer of asylum in Nigeria. He calls
for help from American troops in participation in a peaceful transition of power.
Later, the U.S. says it will deploy a small amount of troops - from 500 to 2,000.
U.S. Unemployment rises to 6.4% a - nine year high.
