President Bush names
Clarence Thomas
(43),
a conservative black judge with a controversial
record on civil rights - to replace Thurgood
Marshall.
President Bush does a two-day tour to celebrate
the fourth of July. He began with the presentation
at the White House of the Presidential Medal of
Freedom to the five senior officials who played a
central role in the Persian Gulf: Gen Colin Powell,
Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, James Baker,
Dick Cheney and Brent Scowcroft. Bush headed
off to Mt Rushmore for a speech and
celebrations.

Lee Remick
(55) of cancer. Jack Lemmon,
who starred with her in 1962’s “Days Of Wine And Roses” said
of her: “Knowing and working with Lee will always remain one
of the most joyous experiences of my life. She was precious
and certainly the embodiment of grace.”

cancer that was diagnosed three months
ago.

Tom Selleck
sues “The Globe” after his name appeared in the
article “Gay Stars Stop Traffic.” Selleck says he is not a
homosexual and noted that he is married with a daughter. In his
first marriage, he raised a son.
Sports - Denver and Miami are given approval as the National
League’s expansion franchises. Both baseball teams will make
their debuts in 1993. Colorado’s logo - featuring a soaring white
baseball against a snow-capped purple mountain backdrop. The Denver Team
will be called the Colorado Rockies. Some wanted to call it the Denver Bears - a
nickname from a minor league team. Miami’s will be called the Florida Marlins.
Steffi Graf
wins her 10th title in a Grand Slam
tournament at Wimbledon, defeating Gabriela
Sabatini.
Rivals IBM and Apple say the have plans for a
high-stakes technology swap. Under some of the
terms - the deal calls for the creation of a new
company, jointly owned - to write a new type of
software and the integration of Apple’s Mac design
into IBM systems.
Major League umpire
Steve Palermo
is shot while trying to
help two waitresses being robbed at a restaurant parking lot in
Dallas. His wounds are not life threatening.
