Klaus Barbie, the Nazi Gestapo chief known as the “Butcher of Lyon” is convicted
of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life in a French prison.
On the ever of his first public appearance before the joint investigating
committees, The White House says President Reagan “is interested in getting
the facts out” and hearing what Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North, who was fired from
his national security staff as a result of the Iran-contra scandal, has to say.
Ending months of silence, Oliver North testifies that he never personally
discussed the diversion of Iranian arms sales profits to contra rebels with
President Reagan, but assumed, without being told, that Reagan had approved.
Civil rights activist Coretta Scott King and presidential candidate Richard A.
Gephardt add their voices to a call by the head of the NAACP for derailment of
Judge Robert Bork’s nomination to the Supreme Court. They say he apposes
affirmative action.

Business - ZZZZ Best Co, the Los Angeles carpet-cleaning
firm founded by Barry Minkow, the 21-year-old wiz kid, will
file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection because it has
discovered facts that ‘appear to substantiate allegations of
fraud associated with the company’s restoration business.”
The carpet cleaning firm’s stock has been fallng since a May report said that
ZZZZ Best rang up $72,000 in false credit card charges in 1984 and 1985. The

stock traded as high as $18.375, is now down to
$2.75. ZZZZ has confirmed that
Minkow
had
resigned because of unspecified “severe medical
problems.” In May, Minkow had announced
preliminary results for ZZZZ Best’s fiscal year
ended April 30 that showed a record profit of at
least $5 million on $50 million in sales. That was
compared to net income of $945,645 or 12 cents a
share on $4.8 million in revenue the year earlier.
The SEC is investigating the company.
Trends - More comedy clubs. Nationwide there are an estimated 250 comedy
clubs and more them 12 people went to them last year.

Minneapolis Twins’ Mark McGuire becomes the first rookie to hit 30 homers in

Simple Minds has not one, but two albums out that are
new - from two different labels. “In the City of Light” is
a live double album from A&M Records and “Sister Feelings Call” from Virgin.
The latter was made in 1981 when they were with Virgin and apparently the label
has rummaged through its vaults to cash in on the band’s newfound popularity.
Madonna will give a concert to benefit the American Foundation of AIDS
Research on July 13 at Madison Square garden. The concert will be her first in
the New York area on her national “Who’s that Girl?” tour.

Tom Snyder will move from TV to radio this fall to host a national call-in talk show
announced this week by the ABC Radio Networks. Look for it early September.

Sean Penn
who was to begin serving a 6-day Los
Angeles County Jail sentence this week, wins a delay until
August due to film commitments. He was sentenced two
weeks ago for punching a movie extra on the set of the
police drama, “Colors.” A the time of the incident, Penn
was on probation for beating a man he thought was trying
to kiss his wife, rock star Madonna.
Seen - Prince Charles and Princess Diana catch a
London rock ‘n’ roll show at Wembley stadium featuring
the band Genesis. There’s been speculation about the
state of their marriage.
They’re back - Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello get together for “Back to
the Beach,” out on July 31.

Chuck Barris is suing the children’s television program, “I’m Telling,” saying it’s
unfairly based on his “Newlywed Game.”
