Prime Minister Ben-Gurion , architect of Israeli
independence, beats down a Communist attempt to
oust him on a no-confidence vote. But he faces a
second parliamentary test over selling arms to
Germany that was expected to cause his resignation.
The Senate Rockets Committee injects the names of
James Hoffa and one of his aides into its hearings on
an airplane deal in which an alleged international gun
smuggler became involved. Hoffa was not present to
answer testimony that he had maneuvered to loan
$300,000 of his union’s funds to a Cleveland group,
which owned the big military cargo planes. Witnesses say the loan was
authorized but never made.
President Eisenhower says he believes inflation will be one of the big issues of
the 1960 election.
Visitor - Soviet First dep. Premier Kozlov is in San Francisco and told listeners
the Communists would even support the Roman Catholic Pope ‘If he is for
peace.” He had been in Sacramento and before that, Washington. From here,
he’s off to Detroit.
Prime Minister Ben-Gurion (74) of Israel resigns and dissolves his government in
a quarrel with four leftwing cabinet ministers who apposed his sale of arms to
West Germany. He said the dispute had injured Israeli prestige.
Queen Elizabeth visits Chicago, drawing an estimated two
million cheering spectators into the streets, charming the
many who met her and crowning it all with a simple speech
at a civic dinner. “This has been an unforgettable day,” said
the Queen.
In Havana - police report the arrest of many Cubans and the
seizure of large quantities of arms in the smashing of an anti-
government plot in Havana.

Abolition of state primaries - Sen. John F.
Kennedy contends that a booming crop of favorite
sons and the abolition of some primaries are
stifling the people’s voice in the choice of
Presidential candidates. If states are going to
abolish Presidential primaries and favorite sons
are going to block of national candidates from
running their states, the effect is going to be to
deny the people a voice in the selection of the
party nominees,” said Kennedy. Although he
declined to name any specific states, Kennedy
made it clear he is irked by a growing disposition
on the part of governors to mark their states as
out-of-bounds territory for leading candidates for
the Democratic nomination.
Teamsters President James Hoffa charges that senator John F. Kennedy was
“afraid” to debate labor-reform legislation with him on a national radio or
television hook-up. Kennedy retorted that it was obvious that he could not enter
into a public debate ‘with every individual like Mr. Hoffa, who has consistently
misused the American labor movement for his own selfish and improper ends.”
President Eisenhower says the U.S. was watching developments in the
Caribbean area, but “must depend primarily upon the Organization of American
States to take cognizance of these difficulties and if they can find any reason for
action, that they re the ones that must recommend it.” The Organization of
American States is to decide whether it will act on a charge by the Dominican
Republic that it faces an invasion organized by Cuba and Venezuela.
Responding - Fidel Castro declares that Cuba would never
accept any “interference” in her domestic affairs by any
international organization or nation, including the United States.
The Federal Aviation Agency proposes drastic new rules to curb
drunkenness aboard commercial airliners:
1) Ban any passenger from drinking alcoholic beverages
aboard an airliner unless the drinks are served by the
airlines themselves.
2)
2) Ban any carrier from serving alcoholic drinks to a passenger who
already is intoxicated.
3) The rules will take effect in about 2 months.

Week of July 1, 1959
Sports - Don Drysdale of the Los Angeles Dodgers will be the National League’s
starting pitcher in the 26 th annual All-Star game. Vice President Nixon will toss
out the first ball in Pittsburgh.
Casey Stengel says Mickey Mantle is a five-way player. He can beat you give
ways - with his fielding, his arms, his legs, the short hit and the long ball.
Peruvian Alex Olmedo adds the famed Wimbledon
championship to his growing list of tennis honors.
Radio news - R. Peter Straus is
named president of WMCA, New York.
He replaces his father, Nathan Straus,
who becomes chairman of the station’s
board of direction. Also, Stephen
Labunski is named vice president and
general manager. They’re about to
make WMCA the top pop station in the country.
Chapter 11 - The Mutual Broadcasting System is seeking
debut settlement in court and says it is $3 million in the hole.
Television news -
Bing Crosby is set for another ABC-TV program September
29. The hour-long special may include his four sons. He’ll
also appear on Frank Sinatra’s first show of the season -
same network on October 19. Dean Martin will also be part of that program.
Allen Funt’s “Candid Camera” which has been off television for a few years, will
be revived in the fall - this time, as a special feature on the Garry Moore show.
Funt’s original “Candid Microphone” was introduced to radio in 1947. Durward
Kirby and Marion Lorne will participate.
Entertainment news -
Actor Keenan Wynn is accused in a sheriff’s report of punching and kicking his
wife (Sharley) and then tossing her mother to the floor three times.
