Appearing on a special “See It Now” program on CBS-
TV, Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito tells the audience
that he disagrees with Soviet Boss Khrushchev on the
fate of America. He contested the Khrushchev assertion
that the grandchildren of Americans alive today would live
under Socialism: “I wouldn’t say so categorically that your
grandsons would live in Socialism, because it is up to the
American people to decide what system of society it will
develop and what system it would prefer.” The interview
was conducted by host
Edward R. Murrow
.
The Kremlin purges three top Communist leaders by
firing
V.M Molotov
, Georgi Malenkov and Lazar
Kaganovich. All three are reportedly under house arrest.
They were accused of collusion and intrigue against the
party’s leadership. Molotov was First Deputy Premier and
Minister of State Control... Malenkov was a First Deputy
Premier and Minister of Electric Power Stations.
Kaganovich was a First Deputy Premier. All three later
confessed to a plot to oust Nikita Khrushchev before they
were purged. In a speech, Nikita Khrushchev accused the three ousted leaders
of being cunning plotters for power.
The Naval Ordnance Laboratory says it has developed a dry cell battery which
can be recharged. The battery, which was invented to power electronic control
units in missiles or underwater mines, could also one day be used to power
portable radios and hearing aids. The battery is no bigger than a 50-cent piece.
