President Reagan says that the U.S. government has repeatedly advised
Americans to get out of Lebanon and that those who ignored the warnings
“clearly did so at their own risk.”
President Reagan previewed his State of the Union address for congressional
Republicans this morning and was told that most Americans ‘were tired of
hearing” about the Iran-contra scandal believing his Administration.
Mikhail Gorbachev calls for sweeping democratic changes in Soviet society -
things such as giving voters a choice of candidates, allowing secret ballots and
promoting non-Communist Party members to high-level jobs.

us.” “Much is at stake,” said the
President.
Spokesman Larry Speakes says
President Reagan has the “utmost confidence” in Secretary of State George P.
Shultz and is “mightily ticked off” that some White House officials were quoted
anonymously as saying Shultz was not a team player and was trying to shirk
responsibility for the Iran arms deal.
Manila - Government soldiers open fire on thousands of leftist peasant
demonstrators as they approached the presidential palace. At least 12 are dead
and 94 injured.
Christa McAuliffe’s brother (Christopher) accuses NASA of exploiting his sister
for the sake of publicity and calls on the government to abandon for new
programs to put everyday people into space.
Maureen Reagan
, the President’s daughter, is elected co-
chairman of the republican National Committee despite the
reservations of some conservative party members.
The U.S. economy grew at an anemic annual rate of 1.7% in
the last thre months of last year, down from 2.8% in the
previous quarter.

Entertainment -
Liberace is gravely ill with anemia, emphysema and heart
disease, a publicist said in a reversal of previous reports that
the entertainer was suffering only from anemia brought on by
a strict watermelon diet.
Technical news -
JVC says a Super-VHS tape is on the way. It’s supposed to
deliver a taped picture comparable to that of wider one-inch broadcast-use
recorders. It provides more than 400 lines of resolution, compared to the 240
lines on current VHS decks. But, you’ll need a new VCR.
Sports -
New York Rangers’ General Manager
Phil Esposito will coach the National
Hockey League team the rest of the
season. But Esposito said that tom
Webster “is the coach of this team and
will be the coach in September.”
Chris Evert Lloyd says this will be her
final year of full participation on the
women’s tennis tour. She will continue
to play selected tournaments, including
Wimbledon and the French U.S. and
Australian opens.
Super Bowl XXI - The New York
Giants defeat the Denver Broncos 39-
20 as QB
Phil Simms
led four straight
scoring drives in the second half. The
first half was dominated by Denver QB
John Elway who completed 13 of his
first 17 passes. The Broncos led 10-9
at halftime. Simms was named most
valuable player. /
Thousands of boisterous fans gather in Giants stadium to greet the New York
