By a 386-12 vote, the House joined President Carter in urging the transfer

cancellation or boycott of the 1980 Olympic games scheduled for Moscow.

Iran’s first presidential election as results streamed in suggesting

he had won by a landslide.

President Carter says the United States is committed to using

military force against the Soviet Union if necessary to protect the

security of Pakistan. The president called the recent Soviet invasion of

Afghanistan a “radical departure” from previous Kremlin policy.

accused the nuclear physicist of “conducting

subversive activities against the Soviet state.” The

Soviet government newspaper Izvesta called him a traitor and accused him of

passing state secrets to diplomats in meetings at the U.S. Embassy.

The Soviet Union protests that its embassy in Washington is bugged.

“Eavesdropping devices secretly installed by the American espionage services

have been discovered in the living quarters of the U.S.S.R’s Embassy in

Washington.” The State Department so far has refused to comment on the

charges - only confirming the protest.

Consumer prices for 1979 soar to 13.3% - the largest gain in 33 years. The gain

in the previous year (1978) was a mere 9%. Inflation jumped to its highest in

1946 - when the government lifted WWII price controls and prices soared 18.2%

for the year.

On inflation fears - gold continues to rise - reaching $845 an ounce this week -

rising $100 in a single day. Profit takers drove the price down to $808. The price

of gold has soared more than $640 an ounce from a year ago.

In the Iowa precinct caucuses - George Bush is the republican front-runner - with

34% of the vote with 26% for Ronald Reagan. Bush is a former CIA Director.

Also at the Iowa caucuses - President Carter scores a victory over Senator

Edward Kennedy on the democratic side. Carter has 59.1% with Kennedy at

31.2%.

found in his luggage. His 11-concert tour with

Wings has been cancelled. The Beatle sleeps on

a mattress on the floor of the tiny cell. He is

handcuffed and led by rope when taken away for

Jailed for nine days - Paul McCartney (37) is

freed and deported from Japan, “I’m fine, I’m

fine. I’m very sorry that the tour was cancelled.

Goodbye Japan!” A police spokesman said they would not seek an indictment

because he had “been punished socially.”

the murder conviction of boxer Rubin Carter. She’s a key witness against Carter

and figures her privacy was invaded from the song. The murder trial begins in

Spring.

addictive drugs to the singer. The Tennessee

Board of Medical Examiners also found that the doctor guilty of the same

charges for another entertainer - Jerry Lee Lewis. The board accused

Nicholpoulos of prescribing nearly 12,000 pills for The King over a 20-month

period including the stimulant Dexedrine, the depressant Quaalude and the

painkiller Valium.

The FCC - which recently denied the license RKO’s

WNAC-TV (channel 7) in Boston, says the company isn’t fit

to keep its other TV stations either. RKO has stations in the

top-2 markets as well - New York WOR-TV (Channel 9)

and KHJ-TV (Channel 9) in Los Angeles. In denying the

Boston license - the FCC case was based on an

investigation of RKO’s parent company - General Tire, by the Securities and

Exchange Commission. In a report to the SEC, General Tire said that it made a

wide array of questionable contributions and payments between 1971 and 1976..

The company either denied or admitted to any wrongdoing. The FCC says in

addition - that General Tire “tried to pressure companies into placing advertising

with RKO stations as a condition of doing business with General Tire.” A

spokesman for General Tire in Akron, OH says they would appeal “as quickly as

we practically can.”

Passing - Art Director Sir Cecil Beaton (76). He won two Oscars for his designs

for the Hollywood movies “Gigi” and “My Fair Lady.”

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s contract and agrees to a new one that will pay him more

than a million dollars a year for the next four years.

(Family Oriented Radio) - a mix of contemporary

music, entertainment, news and information.

Don Imus, who returned to WNBC’s morning drive slot September 3, is the

hottest morning DJ in New York, according to the last ratings book. He gets a 4.7

overall rating, up from a 2.7. Also to note, WABC’s Harry Harrison (who was fired

in November) scored with 5.1 as did Dan Ingram in the afternoon. The book is

from October/November.

Music news - Jerry Reed is signed as spokesman for “Truckstops of America” -

which owns and operated 26 truckstops in 16 states.

The Commodores will appear on Dinah Shore’s TV Show on February 1.

Television news - NBC-TV is negotiating with comedian

series based in New York that would run daily. It would be a

bold experiment by the network, now locked into game shows

and soap operas during the daytime.
