Dwight D. Eisenhower is sworn in a president on the steps of the Capitol. He was
actually sworn-in the day before in private . Reports say he looked solemn -
rarely cracking a smile. His inaugural address was about the danger inherent in
the world situation. “We live in a land of plenty, but rarely has this earth
known such peril as today. This is you home - yet this is not the whole of
our world. For our world is where our full destiny lies - with men of all
peoples and nations who are or would be free. And for them, and so for us,
this is no time of ease or rest.”
The Soviet Communist party accuses the United States of establishing bases for
Atomic-armed guided missiles around the Soviet Union, raising the threat of a
great new war. Pravda warned Turkey, Iran and Japan that if any of these
missiles were launched from their countries - Russia would answer with “blows
delivered by the same weapons.”
Dr Jonas E. Salk - speaking at a group of medical leaders in
Chicago - opens a new campaign to administer his antipolio
vaccine to everyone in the country - especially those under
40.”Never before have we been faced with the opportunity to
wipe out a disease in such short order. We need not put up with
the prevalence of polio in 1957.” Dr Salk figured that to deliver a
total knockout of the disease, all persons under 30 would have
to get the vaccine.
“The People’s World” - a west coast pro-communist daily newspaper out of San
Francisco says it will become a weekly, instead of a daily paper in February. An
editorial said:
“The years of cold war and McCarthyism were years of attrition for
the paper. Circulation fell, and the basis of support shrunk. Then came 1956, with

its impact on the Left, bringing into focus what has been accurately described as
a crisis on the Left.” The paper hit its highest circulation in 1947 at 20,000. As of
now, it’s less than half that amount.
In Monte Carlo - Princess Grace Kelly gives birth
to a daughter. A 21-gun salute announced the arrival of
Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite - first child of
reigning Prince Rainier III and the Hollywood star. Said
John B. Kelly - the father of Grace Kelly in Philadelphia -
“Oh, shucks, I wanted a boy. That’s six girls now.” Had
the child been a boy - he would have received a 101-gun
solute. The State Department ruled that Grace Kelly’s
baby would be an American citizen - contrary to a ruling
by Prince Rainier that the girl will be “uniquely”
Monagasque.
