President Reagan promises, “30 minutes
of surprises in his State of the Union
Address… lets see.
Radioactive debris from a crippled Soviet satellite plunges enters the atmosphere
over the Indian Ocean. It’s not known if any debris survived after striking the
water.
Consumer prices dipped .3% in December, holding inflation for 1982 to 3.9% -
the smallest gain in a decade.
Retaliation- China has decided to stop buying American cotton, soybeans and
man-made fibers in retaliation for U.S. quotas on Chinese textiles.
Two years in office - President Reagan gives himself high marks at his midterm,
saying the nation is on the right course, but still suffers for “the political mistakes
of the past.”
Medical - A man who paid to have a woman artificially inseminated and carry his
baby rejects the infant after it was born with a birth defect and claims he could
not be the father. But the surrogate mom doesn’t want the baby either. Ray
Stiver, the surrogate mother’s husband says,” - We honestly, sincerely feel we
did our half of the commitment. We feel we’ve been stabbed in the back.”
Technology
- Apple Computer unveils
“The Lisa” - the company’s entry into the
top-of-the-line personal computer market.
Also unveiled - the
Apple model Iie

ad), the latest version of the 5-year-old
Apple II. The “e” is for enhanced.
Lawyers for Sony tell the Supreme Court
that it would be unfair to penalize them
for the copying of television programs by
the millions who have purchased a Sony
Beta VCR. It’s likely that the court will

Third Baseman Ron Cey of the Dodgers is dumped to the Cubs for two Class-A
players.
Music news -
Frank Zappa
has filed a suit to halt production of the
movie “Valley Girl,” saying the movie is unfair
competition and will dilute his trademark. He says the
public has come to know the term “Valley Girl” through
his hit record, featuring his daughter Moon Unit. He has
licensed the valley Girl trademark for clothing,
cosmetics, key chains and greeting cards.
Passing - Don Costa. Began as an arranger and
conductor, but produced many hit records in early
rock/pop. He was 57. Of a heart attack.
Cable TV -
Looks like plans for a second Satellite News Channel (SNC) have been shelved
for now. SNC II was planned to deliver more in-depth news stories. SNC 1 is on
the air, but like Group W’s all-news radio stations, is turning over stories quickly
(You give us 18 minutes and we’ll give you the world.( SNC is jointly owned by
Group W (Westinghouse) and ABC.

Nice start - Walt Disney Telecommunications announces that it has reached an
agreement with cable operator TCI to carry the new Disney Channel when
service begins April 1. TCI reaches about 1.3 subscribers on 175 cable systems
around the country.
