A West German engineer is kidnapped in the second seizure of a West German
citizen in Beirut in five days.
Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole announces the government will order
sweeping drug testing for airline pilots and other employees maintaining aviation
safety.
Mikhail Baryshnikov
, who defected from the Soviet
Union in 1974, is invited to dance again in his homeland.
So far, the dancer has not yet accepted the invitation.
The Long Island Rail Road is shut down due to a strike
with 11 unions, idling some 6,600 workers. Nearly
150,000 passengers between Long island and New York
City will need to seek alternative transportation.
The California Public Utilities Commission orders telephone companies to allow
customers to block their access to toll 976 (prefix) numbers. Such telephone
numbers usually carry a cost between 50 cents and $2 plus any toll charges. 976
numbers have been around since the early 1980’s - 1983 in California.
A federal appeals court orders the FCC to consider whether the fairness doctrine
is constitutional. Begun in 1949, the Supreme Court upheld its constitutionality,
but at the time, noted the matter should be reconsidered if experience “indicates
that it has the effect of reducing rather than enhancing the volume and quality of
coverage.

The experimental AIDS drug AZT clears a major hurdle by a medial advisory
panel.
Passing - Broadway columnist Earl Wilson. He was 79.
Mars announces that red M&M’s are coming back
after an absence of 11 years. The return of the
little candy was prompted by a national outcry that
included thousands of letters to the manufacturer
and the formation of college campus societies.
Red M&M’s were discontinued in 1976 because of
“confusion and concern” over Red Dye No. 2,
which was banned by federal regulators as a
health risk. Red M&M’s were always safe though,
as they contained Red Dye Nos. 3 and 40. Mars sold a limited number of
packages of green and red candies for the holidays.

The Cure’s “Killing An Arab” is raising controversy - particularly by the
Washington based American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee. The group
says the song has no racist overtones and decries the existence of all prejudice,
but the group feels the title is confusing and is asking radio stations not to play it.

tour starting in Plattsburgh, NY. First single from the album
is “Don’t Get Me Wrong.”
Did you catch Bruce Willis’ concert at the New York Ritz
last week?
They’re hot! Almost from know where, Bon Jovi’s “Slippery
When Wet” moves ahead of Bruce Springsteen’s live, five-record set and is #1
on the album charts. Bon Jovi uses a rope from the ceiling and swings over the
heads of the audience to a platform near the rear of an arena to sing for those in
the back. Nice gimmick. Bon Jovi press release - “We’re taking a year-round
block party all over the world… to places hot and cold, dry and wet… and we’re
happier than hell to be doin’ it.” Five years ago, Jon Bon Jovi was sweeping the
halls of a top Manhattan recording studio and cutting his rock ‘n’ roll teeth.
The Beastie Boys - a rap group with rock overtones, are getting hot airplay on
MTV with their surprise hit “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right To party!” They’re
kicking off their “Licensed to Ill” tour, playing 7,000-seat venues.
Entertainment news - When “Top Gun” is released on videotape March 14, it will
contain a Pepsi ad. . The studio says the commercial will drop the retrial price by
$3 to $26.95.

scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz.” He was the last
survivor of the dedicated and desperate band of
travelers who made filmdom’s trip down the yellow brick
road.
