Under increasing fire from Democrats over his handling of U.S.-soviet relations,
President Reagan abandons his tough anti-Communist rhetoric and calls for
resumed arms reduction talks and “a realistic working relationship” with Russia.
Standard Oil of Ohio says it is abandoning its $1.5 billion well at Mukluk Island in
Alaska because the most expensive oil well ever drilled turned out to be a dry
hole.
The economy grew at an annual rate of 4.5% during the fourth quarter of 1983 -
a rate considered healthy.
President Reagan, with the help of three military bands and a 25-minute slide
show, holds a pep rally for his appointees and said “doing what’s good for the
people also turns out to be good politics.”
President Reagan comments on the SuperBowl:
“You know, I’ve been asked a few times who I’m
rooting for since both teams playing are from my
current home towns. And since none of the
Democrats who are interested in this job have
declared their preferences, I see no reason to be
recklessly courageous. May the best team win.”
A federal grand jury accuses Sears, Roebuck of
filing false statements with the U.S. customs service
to avoid paying extra fees on imported television
sets and to hide a “secret rebate” of nearly half a
million dollars that it received from a Japanese TV
set manufacturer.
Technology - The Supreme Court rules that use of videocassette recorders
for taping television shows for private use is legal. Sony Corp. was the
defendant and it’s a major victory for everyone!
Sports - SuperBowl coverage on CBS - Pat Summerall and John Madden call
the action. Don’t miss the two-hour pre-game show with Brent Musberger, Phyllis
George, Irv Cross, Jimmy (The Greek) Snyder, Pat O’Brien, Dick Vermeil, Tom
Brookshier, Hank Stram, John Tesh and Charles Osgood.
Wayne Gretsky gets a hat trick in the first period at Edmonton to lead the Oilers
to a 7-5 victory over Vancouver.

Thomas (Hollywood) Henderson, dropped from several NFL teams because of
drug abuse and disciplinary problems, wants to sell his three Super Bowl rings to
pay for his defense on charges of sexually abusing two teen-age girls.
Tim Belcher, the No. 1 pick in last June’s summer baseball draft of amateur free
agents, is picked by the Yankees as the first choice in the secondary phase of
the winter draft.
Radio news -
Another radio consultant - With eight client radio
stations, WBBG/WMJI (Cleveland) station manager
Mike McVay resigns to form McVay Media, a full-
service consultancy based in Cleveland.
Transtar, which feeds radio formats by way of
satellite, is adding a new format - country.
Wolfman Jack returns to the Los Angeles airwaves
this week and can be heard on KRLA (1110) at
night.
Music news -
Michael Jackson sweeps the 11 th annual American
Music Awards picking up seven awards plus the
special Award of Merit.
Diana Ross presents a $250,000 check to New York City to renovate a
playground in Central Park, fulfilling a promise made last summer. Mayor Edward
Koch, in accepting the check said, “Diana Ross cares too much about New York
and its people to let that stand in the way of fulfilling her commitment to this city.”
The “Diana Ross Playground,” will be in the park’s west side.
Musician Paul McCartney’s wife, Linda is
arrested at Heathrow Airport and charged with
possessing marijuana, Scotland Yard reports.
The arrest came after the couple cut short a
holiday in Barbados because of marijuana
convictions there. She was arrested as she,
her husband Paul and their three children
returned from the Caribbean island. She was
not held after he arrest.

MTV is undertaking an extensive promotion campaign with the Pretenders and
their 52-date U.S. tour. MTV will provide a national on-sale ticket date and a
Pretenders concert to air on the channel in March. The national tour begins
February 15. The MTV/Pretenders campaign begins this week with the premier
of the Pretenders latest video - “Middle of the Road.”
More MTV - MTV and Ohlmeyer Communications pact to produce a series of
music and entertainment programs for distribution in all media. The first project
will be the “Annual MTV Music Video Awards Show,” scheduled for airing on
MTV in June.
Even more MTV - The channel is still looking to hire its sixth VJ, but hasn’t made
any decisions yet. The five MTV VJ’s are - Mark Goodman, JJ Jackson, Nina
Blackwood, Martha Quinn and Alan Hunter. Says Hunter about his job - he does
a lot of homework: “it’s hard to keep up with all the new bands. You’re always in
school. I have a three-ring notebook and I watch as much of MTV as I can
without feeling like it’s the only thing in my life.”
Soon to be available - The making of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.’ It’s airing on
MTV this month, but will be available in retail for $29.95.

Crazy about Jerry Lewis in France - The French bestow the award of
Commander of Arts and Letters on Jerry Lewis - their highest cultural tribute. In
March, France will induct Lewis into the Legion of Honor, thus awarding him the
highest decoration that it can give to anyone, soldier or civilian.
Television news
On “Saturday Night Live” - Michael Palin hosts with musical
guests the Motels.
Phil Donahue wants the rules changed. He had to yank a show
segment featuring Jesse Jackson because he is a declared
presidential candidate in some states and stations are afraid
they will be besieged with equal time requests.
