President Carter orders the government to purchase grain that farmers cannot
sell because of a market system clogged by the refusal of dock workers to load
ships destined for the Soviet Union. Later, British Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher declares her government’s support for moving the Olympic games from
Moscow for the same reasons.
The Soviet-backed government in Afghanistan orders all American
correspondents expelled for “biased reporting” and “interference” in Afghanistan’s
internal affairs.

- In SuperBowl XIV - The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Los Angeles
Rams 31-19 in a game played at the Rose Bowl. Pittsburgh scored two
touchdowns in the last 12 minutes after the rams had led for three quarters - 19-
17. Pittsburgh’s go-ahead touchdown came on a 73-yeard
pass from Terry Bradshaw to John Stallworth.

says she plans to retire from tennis
competition after five more tournaments because she
doesn’t enjoy winning any more. “I just don’t have the same
love for the game that I once did.”

Michael Jackson is juggling two careers - the one with his group along with his
own album and film projects. He says he wants to get into more film projects. “It
took seven months to film ‘The Wiz’ and my bothers wanted to travel and start
work on the ‘destiny’ album, but I couldn’t. And now I want to do more films and
things.”

Music news -
Beatle Paul McCartney is arrested for allegedly Tokyo
to smuggle a half-pound of marijuana through customs
as he arrived at Tokyo International Airport for a
Japanese concert tour. The two-week tour by his group
“Wings” was canceled as a result.
Paul McCartney, being held for allegedly trying to
smuggle marijuana into Japan, is interrogated by police
for six hours while crowds of rock fans outside wept
and shouted “Paul! Paul.” A relaxed McCartney insisted
that he brought the drug into Japan for his own use and
that it is less harmful than alcohol.
A Japanese court rules that Paul McCartney (37) will remain in custody for up to
10 days more while he is questioned about accusations that he tried to bring
marijuana into the country.
