After a 10-year - $150 million study - for the first time medical researchers
(conclusively) reveal that the chance of suffering or dying from a heart attack can
be reduced by lowering the level of cholesterol in the blood.
The United States establishes full diplomatic relations with the Vatican. President
Reagan nominates William Wilson his personal representative and the first
ambassador to the Vatican
In Los Angeles - Angelo Buono Jr .
and Kenneth Bianchi (The Hillside
Stranglers) are sentenced to prison
with no chance of parole. Buono was
convicted of the murders of nine young
woman from 1977 to 1978. Bianchi - a
cousin of Buono - plead guilty to seven
murders.
A judge in New York bars Dior of New York Inc. from resuming an ad campaign
that used a model with a likeness to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
A New Delhi hotel employee quotes Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis on her arrival -
“I have come to India on a holiday. I don’t want to be bothered by anyone.”. She’s
accompanied by her son - John Jr., a history graduate from Brown University.
Thomas (Hollywood) Henderson who played
linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys in the ‘70’s
wants to sell his three Super Bowl rings to pay
his lawyers. He’s up on charges of sexually
abusing two teen-age girls. Henderson was fired
from the Cowboys in 1979 for making funny
faces at television cameras while the team was
losing to the Washington Redskins.
Bendar Wu and Joseph Spano are arrested on
charges of copyright and trademark infringement
after the FBI raids their offices and warehouse,
seizing thousands of counterfeit Cabbage Patch dolls. Stanley Birch - general
counsel for Appalachian Original Artworks in Cleveland, GA - the makers of the
real dolls said, “Kids know the difference but many adults, who do the buying,
don’t”

In Tucson - county judge Jack Arnold declares Carl Whitehead (19) ‘braindead”
from watching too much television and for his probation - must read books and
provide a monthly list of those he reads to his probation officer. Whitehead was
convicted of theft.
Passing - Ray Kroc (81) - milkshake machine salesman
who eventually built the McDonalds hamburger chain.
Opened his first McDonald’s in 1955 at Des Plaines, IL.
Plagued in recent years with increasingly serious
illnesses including diabetes and a major stroke. Kroc also
owned the San Diego Padres baseball team.
Passing - actor Jack La Rue (81) - known for his gangster
roles in the ‘30’s and ‘40’s.
Acted in more than 150 films. His last was “Robin and the Seven Hoods” in 1964.
Actor Peter Lawford checks into the Betty Ford Center for alcohol treatment in
Palm Springs. Elizabeth Taylor is there too - checking in last month. Trade paper
Daily Variety says that in addition to medical treatment - the stars get to take out
the garbage and vacuum the carpets.
Engagement - Actress Amanda Blake (52) (Kitty on Gunsmoke) to Mark Spaeth
(44). He’s a real estate investor. “She wants a horse instead of an engagement
ring.”
Pitcher Don Drysdale, shortstop Luis Aparicio and
slugger Harmon Killebrew are elected to the Hall of
Fame by the Baseball Writers Assn of America.
