President Clinton dedicates a statue of the late President
Franklin d. Roosevelt in his wheelchair - the first statue ever depicting a world
leader using a wheelchair - at the entry to the FDR Memorial in Washington.
Interesting story - An attempt to save money on the costs of shipping a dead
body, Janet Levine puts her dead mother in her car and drives from Colorado to
Oregon so that she could be buried next to her husband. Transporting a body
across state lines without a death certificate is illegal, but authorities said they
would not press charges against Levine.
Acclaimed racehorse “ Affirmed” dies at 26. He was the
11 th and most recent Triple Crown champ, which he did in
1978.
FedEx signs a seven-year shipping agreement valued at
$7.2 billion with the U.S. Postal service.
Passing - Al Goss (82), credited for inventing the pager,
walkie talkie and cordless phone.
Passing - William Hewlett of Hewlett/Packer fame. He was
87. He and David Packard founded the company with a
combined capital of $538 back in 1938.
Hi Tech - Napster releases a new version of its software
that includes an e-commerce link to CDNow, marking the first example of how
the alliance between the media giant and the controversial music-swapping firm
will make money.

At the Consumer electronics Show, Bill
Gates unveils the Xbox game console
and Ultimate TV, a set-top box that
marries a TiVo-style digital video
recorder with WebTV-style interactive
television. Xbox, a sophisticated game
system, trumps competing consoles in
raw computing power and is seen by
many as Microsoft’s best shot at
breaking into the living rooms of
consumers.
Music news - Michael Jackson will join his brothers in making a Jackson 5
reunion album. It’s due out in July.
U2 will launch a U.S. arena tour in March.
At the American Music Awards - Faith Hill and
Tim McGraw dominate with Hill winning 3
trophies and husband McGraw winning 1. Hill
was named favorite female artist, favorite female
country artist and “Breathe” was named best
country album. Creed was chosen favorite
alternative music artist with their CD “Human
Clay.” Other winners - Toni Braxton, Backstreet
Boys, Destiny’s Child and The Dixie Chicks. The
ceremony was hosted by Britney Spears and included a performance by Jennifer
Lopez.
People’s Choice awards are handed out with Mel Gibson wining as favorite actor,
Julia Roberts as favorite actress.
Sports - David Cone leaves the Yankees for the
Boston Red Sox. “He wants to beat the Yankees,”
Boston General Manager Dan Duquette said. “Why else
would he sign with the Red Sox?”
Television news - E! recounts the unhappy life of Judy
Garland on the channel’s “E! True Hollywood Story.”

CBS is adding a second “Survivor” - to premiere after the Superbowl January 28,
and the network confirms it will add a third Survivor sometime in the future.
ABC is revamping “Millionaire” - It will now be designed to attract young viewers
by placing members of groups such as the Dixie Chicks, Backsteet Boys and
Metallica in the show’s hot seat.
Time Warner agrees to sell the money losing World Championship Wrestling
operation (WCW) to an investors’ group in preparation for an AOL deal.
Fox announces plans for “Los
Luchadores,” a live-action Latino
superhero series that will join Saturday
mornings in February.

“Temptation Island” after learning one of
the couples being enticed to break up on
the show has a child.
Hollywood news - Kim Basinger files for divorce from Alex Baldwin citing

Jason Priestley will serve five days this month at a

received last year.
Ricky Martin is set to headline a George W. Bush pre-
inauguration gala January 18.
Jay Leno signs to continue hosting “The Tonight Show” through the end of 2005.
Said Leno “The negotiations took 20 minutes… I said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Tack on
as many years as you want.”
Legendary ABC broadcaster Jim McKay will work for the 2002 Winter Olympics
in Salt Lake City for NBC. McKay will work in the studio alongside NBC host Bob
