President Reagan names Marlin
Fitzwater to replace Larry Speakes as
chief spokesman for the White House. He
was press secretary to Vice President
George Bush.
The Supreme Court clears the way for
banks to buy and sell stocks for customers
in offices throughout the nation. . The ruling
moves banks another step toward
becoming all-purpose financial centers.
The Supreme Court upholds a California
law that gives pregnant employees the right
to a four-month leave and guarantees that
they get back their own or an equivalent job
afterward.
The House, feisty in its first legislative vote
of the 100 th Congress, overwhelmingly approves a $20 billion clean water bill that
President Reagan vetoed late last yard despite unanimous congressional support
Retail sales, bolstered by last-minute Christmas shopping, surged a near record
4.4% in December.
The nation’s jobless rate fell to 6.7% in December, the lowest monthly level in
1986, while inflation remained in check.
In Gulfport, MS - A woman who forgot she had placed her 2 ½-month old son
atop near her car drove-off with the infant still on the roof, and the boy fell off and
suffered a broken collarbone.
Republican Gov. Evan Mecham fulfilled a campaign pledge by formally
rescinding a state holiday honoring assassinated civil rights leader Martin Luther
King Jr.
Three Mafia family godfathers and five underlings are sentenced to prison terms
of up to 100 years for running “The Commission” that directed murders, loan

Salerno, leader of the Genovese crime family and Colombo
family Don Carmine (Junior) Persico were sentenced to
100 years in prison and fined $240,000. The head of the
Lucchese family, Anthony (Tony ducks) Corallo also
received a 100-year sentence and a $250,000 fine.
Weekly Radio - President Reagan tells the nation he fells
“just fine” after Monday’s surgery and will soon be “suited
up and back on the playing field” for a fourth-quarter
defense of his program and the record $one-million 1988
budget he submitted to Congress.
The surrogate mother who agreed to have a baby for a childless couple and then
changed her mind testifies in a bitter custody battle that she decided while giving
birth, not to give up on her daughter. “I started out really wanting to do this, a
tearful Mary Beth Whitehead said of her agreement with William and Elizabeth

New at Disneyland - “Star Tours. It features
characters from “Star Wars” - the first time a
Disneyland attraction has used imagery from a non-
Disney movie. “Star Tours” features a combination of
effects to seem like you’re flying in space.

John Mackovic says his dismissal as coach of the
Kansas City Chiefs came a week after he was offered
a tow-year contract extension by the club.
Music news -
Elton John is discharged from a Sydney hospital after
being told he doesn’t have cancer. The singer’s
surgeon Dr. John Tonin, said a biopsy carried out
after the singer’s throat operation, said he had a non-
malignant lesion.

Television news -
The current version of the low-rated CBS Morning News signs off. Saying
goodbye were co-anchors Charlie Rose and Sandy Will, weatherman Steve
Baskerville and newsman Douglas Edwards. CBS will debut “CBS Morning
News” back with “The Morning Show” this week. The news will be co-anchored
