New Year’s resolution - President Eisenhower
cables Soviet leaders that he hopes the New Year will
bring better understanding between the Russian and
American people.
Proposals for reorganization of the Defense
department to place a single commander at the head
of the nation’s armed forces rolls up strong bipartisan
support in congress.
Soviet Russia shoots a man-carrying rocket 186 miles
into space and the man parachuted back to earth. If true, it may be an event
more dramatic than the launchings of Sputnik I and the dog-carrying Sputnik II
last fall.
J apanese officials announce details of original projects to
be started in 1958, including two of the longest tunnels in the
world and this country’s first, long-distance superhighway.
One of the projects - The Japanese National Railways said it
hopes surveys can start this year on a 22 ½-mile undersea
tunnel connecting the main islands of Honshu and Hokkaido.
It would take 10 years to build at an estimated cost of 4170
million.
Peter Siegle a consulting psychologist conducted a study
and came up with conclusion that the credit card is replacing
the greenback (cash). “We are living in a credit culture,”
Siegle said. “Instead of worshipping money, we cherish small
pieces of paper, good any time, any place.” “Ma man can go
around the world without a cent of cold, hard cash, as long
as he’s well supplied with credit cards. He’ll need one for
restaurants, another for hotels, and others for airlines and
steamship lines. Siegle continues by saying
credit cards are something of a status symbol
and they give him a sense of security.
Carl Sandburg , the great Lincoln biographer
and dean of American poets predicts he’ll live
to be 88 years old and maybe even 99. He

celebrates his 80 th birthday this week.
The Army says it has set a new altitude record for a helicopter. Capt. James
Bowman of Amboy, Ind, flying a Cessna Y41 Seneca helicopter at Wichita, Kan
recaptured the altitude record from France by reaching 30,335 feet.

Ava Gardner admits in Madrid that she suffered
facial injuries in a bullring accident last October,
but denies she will need plastic surgery to repair
the damage to her profile.
Judy Garland, annoyed by the noise of the New
Year’s Eve audience at the Flamingo Hotel in Las
Vegas, stormed off the state after a loud exchange
with patrons and cut short her singing engagement
at the hotel.
Maria Menghini Callas walks out on the middle of a gala Rome Opera House
premier. He action led to fights among the bejeweled audience. She complained
of sudden hoarseness, locked herself in her dressing room and asked for a
doctor.
John Barrymore Jr. is jailed after reconciliation with his
wife apparently came temporarily unglued on a Beverly
Hills street corner.
Red Skelton is seriously ill following a near fatal asthma
attack.
