is elected President in a voter
rebuke to10 years of Sandinista rule. Chamorro
defeated President Daniel Ortega.
President Bush hails Chamorro’s victory and calls
for a “peaceful transition” to democratic rule in
Nicaragua.
As part of an eight-hour videotaped deposition,
Ronald Reagan says he did not authorize using
profits from arms sales to Iran to aid rebels in
Nicaragua and doubts it really happened.
A federal grand jury in Anchorage indicts Exxon on five criminal charges in
connection with the Alaskan oil spill last year. It was the worst oil spill in U.S
history. The company faces fines of $640 million.

successfully pushes his proposal
for a western-style super presidency through the
legislature despite vigorous objections. Critics charged
it would place two much power in one man’s hands.
The TV show “Entertainment Tonight” has put together

bankruptcy. Downey says he has $100 in his pocket and
$320 in the bank. One of his creditors is a limousine
company.

(70) of a heart attack. Publisher
of the magazine that bears his name.

Johnnie Ray
(63) - Pop Singer of
the 50’s. Ray had a string of hits on Columbia
Records. His biggest hits were “Cry” and
“Just Walking In The Rain.” Dubbed “the
prince of wails” and “The nabob of sob” due
to his impassionate singing style.
Cornelious (Cornell) Gunter, lead vocalist for The Coasters is shot to death while
driving through North Las Vegas. Gunter was shot through the windshield at an
intersection. He was to appear in Las Vegas this weekend. He joined the
Coasters in 1957. The group is best known for their hits “Yakety Yak (don’t talk
back)” and Charlie Brown (he’s a clown)” in the 50’s and have been a favorite
with live audiences ever since. Police still don’t have a motive or a suspect.
