Navy Secretary James Webb resigns with a blast at Defense Secretary frank
Carlucci’s budget-cutting decision to postpone plans for a 600-ship American
Navy by the end of 1989.
South Africa bans all political activities by 17 opposition groups including the
country’s largest anti-apartheid organization, the United Democratic Front.
Deposed Panama president Eric Delvalle goes into hiding hours before the
military moved to order him into exile.
The Reagan Administration declares that it still recognizes Eric Delvalle as the
President of panama, but rules out any military intervention.
120,000 Soviet Armenians demand reattachment of a small mountainous region
to the Armenian republic.
South Africa - Riot police arrest Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu and two
dozen other church leaders as they marched with Bibles in their hands toward
parliament to protest bans on black opposition activity.
Mayor Ed Koch of New York called President Reagan “a
wimp” in the war on drugs after taking out a full-page
newspaper ad urging the President to cut economic aid to
drug-producing countries. “We are truly in a war with the
drug pushers, but the President is not acting as the
commander in chief. If anything, He’s acting as a wimp,”
said Koch on CBS This Morning.
Former Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger is
joining the law firm of Rogers and Wells as a Washington-
based specialist in international law and finance.
Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan says that U.S. economic
growth will slow this year but that he sees no indication that the country is slippng
into recession.

medal.
Bonnie Blair sets the 500-meter Olympic speed skating and wins a gold medal.
She crossed the finish line in 39.10, defeating Christa Rothenburger of East
Germany by two/100ths of a second.
Donald Trump announces that the fight between unbeaten heavyweights Mike
Tyson and Michael Spinks will be held in Atlantic City on June 27.
Larry Bird makes two free throws with 39 seconds left and the Celtics overcome
the New York Knicks 95-93.

Sports announcer Bob Costas will get his own
late late night talkshow with “Later With Bob
Costas” on NBC. It’s set to debut August 22.
CBS confirms that Wheel of Fortune host will
conduct a late-night weeknight talk show
opposite NBC’s late-night champ. Sajak says he will leave NBC’s morning
version of “Wheel” in December, but will continue the syndicated evening
version.
Actress Susan Dey of “L.A. Law” marries Warner Bros executive Bernie
Sifronski.
Candice Bergen gets her own series as “Murphy Brown” - described as a
“famous and controversial on-air personality” with a get-tough style.”
