Week of February 22, 1970
Five leading European airlines, including BOAC, cancel passenger or freight
service to Israel following explosions that sent a Tel Aviv-bound Swissair jet into
a fatal crash and forced an Austrian airliner into an emergency landing.
Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir warned the Arab states
and terrorist groups that Israel will retaliate against them if
there is any further sabotage of Israeli planes or air
routes. The Prime Minister spoke after bombs killed 47
persons on a Swissair plane bound for Tel-Aviv and
damaged an Austrian airliner carrying mail for Israel.
Gov. Lester Maddox of Georgia called a Negro
congressman a baboon and an ass when the lawmaker
threatened to throw him out of the House restaurant in
Washington, for giving away souvenir ax handles. Maddox and Rep. Charles
Diggs (D-Mich) - one of the House’s nine black members, engaged in a shouting
match that some feared would result in blows. It is said that the ax handles recall
Maddox’s days as an Atlanta restaurant owner when he used ax and pick
handles to bar Negroes.
Sports - Jerome (Dizzy) Dean, the Hall of Fame pitcher, is one of five co-
conspirators named in a federal indictment charging 10 other men with gambling
conspiracy. It all has to do with an alleged sports betting ring in Detroit.

Former Mission: Impossible star Barbara Bain and
Paramount Pictures reach an out-of-court settlement of
a dual breach of contract suit pending between them.
Paramount filed suit against the actress last June,
charging that she had failed to fulfill her contract
commitments in the CBS series. Subsequently, she filed
a counter suit against the studio.

next fall.
Dwayne Hickman, who portrayed Dobie in the Dobie Gillis series a few years
back, is leaving Los Angeles “to escape air pollution.”

Music news -
Paul McCartney joins neighbors in complaining about the girls who muster
outside his house at night. One London police inspector said, “Things reach a
head every weekend with dozens of teenagers, mainly girls, there in droves.”
“We can only move them on by threatening an obstruction charge. They stand
outside all night, sometimes in the bitter cold. I don’t understand it.”
Marilyn McCoo and The Fifth Dimension
appear on an episode of “It Takes A Thief” this
week. “Sing A Song of Murder” features the group
performing two songs - one is Burt Bacharach’s
“One Less Bell To Answer.”
Elvis Presley gives his first Houston concert
appearance in 10 years and opens the 38 th annual
edition of “America’s Wildest Rodeo.”
Led Zeppelin are set for a new U.S. tour beginning March 23 -Portland, Oregon
with stops including Denver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Miami Beach
and Memphis.
March 1 - The Ed Sullivan Show will be devoted exclusively to music composed
by the Beatles. Besides the Beatles (on film/tape), appearing will be Dionne
Warwick, Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme, Peggy Lee and Duke Ellington, who
composed a new concerto based on Beatle songs.
United Airlines is using John Denver’s “Leaving On A Jet Plane” in its
commercials.
