Six Arab nations call on the U.N. Assembly to urge action on Israel for failing to
withdraw from Egypt and to giver her economic, military and financial sanctions.
The Yugoslav government accuses the Soviet Union of trying to discredit and
isolate Yugoslavia.
On a shortwave broadcast, marking the 15
th
anniversary of the Voice of America,
President Eisenhower assures nations of the
Middle East that they “can count on our help”
if the United Nations cannot protect them
against international Communism and they
ask American assistance.
The government’s cost-of-living index rises to
a new record high last month for the fifth
month in a row, recording a .2% rise between
December and January.

Garters
are back! Says one
manufacturer, “Everybody from
brides to broads are wearing
them. Women no longer use them to hold their stockings up as
they once did. The girdle does that. But garters make a woman
feel glamorous… give her a lift... bring out the siren in her. A
woman wears garters for the same reason she wears a plunging
neckline.”
Entertainment news - June Allyson and Dick Powell call their marriage quits after
11 years. Ms. Allyson told the press - “We have not been getting along for the
past few years even though we have tried and I have decided that Richard and I
have a better chance for happiness if we are apart from each other.”
Singer Pat Boone is shooting his first movie - “Bernadine.”

Television news
- “I Love Lucy” sponsors
General Foods and Proctor & Gamble want the
show to continue, but Lucy and Desi have had
it. They do not want to produce the half-hour
series and instead, want another deal with
CBS.
Walt Disney begins auditions to fill out his
Mouseketter troupe. A cadre of seven
youngsters remain from last year’s group of 21.
They are - Annette Funicello, Darlene
Gillespie, Sharon Baird, Cubby O’Brien, Karen
Pendleton, Bobby Burgess and Doreen Tracey.
NBC raid on ABC… NBC-TV contacted the
sponsors of ABC-TV’s “Lawrence Welk,” “Rin
Tin Tin” and “Lone Ranger” to lure them over
the NBC.
The FCC orders WRGB-TV (Channel 6) to
move from VHF to UHF as channel 47, in order
to make the Albany
area an all-UHF
market. The station
says it will contest.
“Zorro” - the Disney-produced ABC series starring
Guy Williams will begin offering “cliffhangers” on its
episodes - the first cliffhangers produced for a regular
TV series. The show will have a running plot and
continuing characters, with a tense climax each week
designed to carry over home TV viewers with maximum
suspense to the next week’s episode. Walt Disney
believes the result will be a smaller percentage of
transient audience and a much bigger percentage of
permanent viewers as was true in the heyday of movie
theater serials.
Jerry Lewis’ first solo TV did great in the ratings. The
January 26 NBC special grabbed a 46.6 share of the
audience.

Radio news - 1010WINS New York has a new morning
show as Bill Stern returns to the air on “Contact.” He’s
been off the air due to illness. It’s music and information
and interviews as Stern “contacts” someone either in the
news or entertainment world. And, he’ll play records from
the popular music lists. Mon-Fri 7:00-10:00am. Stern was
last with the ABC radio network.
More WINS as DJ Jack Lacy celebrates 10 years at the
station this week. A host of record artists will say their
congrats to Jack, both in studio and on the phone.
Music news - Due to his souring popularity - RCA Victor
is releasing 20 Harry Belafonte singles (all previously
released songs) - a newly packaged in special four-color
sleeves.
Thousands of teenagers storm the Paramount Theater for
another Alan Freed rock ‘n’ roll show. They smashed glass, danced barefoot in
the aisles and their screams drowned out the music. The event featured the
WINS DJ’s latest rock movie, plus stage show.
Porter Wagoner, star of “Ozark Jubilee” makes his last appearance there and
moves to become a regular on WSM’s (rival) “Grand Ole Opry” effective this
week. Wagoner joined KWTO, Springfield, MO, and home of the Ozark Jubilee,”
in 1951.
Norm Prescott
, a DJ at WBZ in Boston, says Tab
Hunter may well replace Elvis Presley. He just conducted
a “win-a-date” where gals could win a date with Tab
Hunter, who’s riding high with “Young Love.” Prescott
says he pulled 11,000 letters in over two days. The
response was greater than when he offered three
genuine hairs from Presley’s sideburns last year.
Columbia signs the husband-wife duo Shirley Jones and
Jack Cassidy for an album deal.

New teen star -
Tommy Sands
, who starred on the NBC-
TV “Kraft Theatre” drama “The Singin’ Idol” gets his first
single released. On Capitol it’s “Teenage Crush” and Hep
Dee Hoodle.” Sands got the TV break when Elvis was
originally approached for the roll, of which the video play
resembles. He turned it down because of previous
commitments. But Elvis’ manager, Col. Tom Parker
recommended Sands, who he knew as a folksinger from the
West Coast.
Don’t miss the touring “Birdland Stars of ‘57” with Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine
and Count Basie. First show’s kicked-off at Carnegie Hall and at White Plains,
NY.
