Dr Klaus Fuchs, described as a Jekyll-Hyde wizard of science, pleads guilty and
is given the maximum sentence of 14 years in prison for betraying American and
British atomic secrets to Soviet Russia after a 90-minute trial.
Top scientists warn that if the Hydrogen
bomb works, it could easily be made to
kill everyone in the world. At the same
time, Dr Hans Bethe of Cornell University
and four other prominent physicists said
it take three years to know whether such
a bomb could be produced. As conceived
in theory, the H-bomb would only take
500 tons of heavy hydrogen, either in
one H-bomb or a number of them to
make a dust that would kill everyone in
the world. The scientists were guests on
a University of Chicago Round Table
broadcast seen over channel 5 in Chicago.
In Oklahoma City - a fireman, thinking he grabbed a two-year old girl, instead -
grabs a doll in a smokey apartment fire. Said fireman Bob Coley - “I crawled on
the floor to the bed. I couldn’t see a thing because of the smoke, but I felt
something wrapped in a blanket. When I pulled it off the bed, it cried just like a
baby. When I got outside, I saw it was just a doll - a big baby doll.” Coley made
several more attempts and found the real baby girl - but it was too late. She died
of suffocation.
Also in Oklahoma City - a wild leopard leaped from its 18-foot pit at the
Oklahoma City zoo, scattering hundreds of visitors. The police riot squad rushed
to the zoo to evacuate the visitors and attempt to track down the big cat. Police
have an order to “shoot to kill” from the zoo director. Residents of nearby Lincoln
Park are warned to stay indoors overnight. Zoo officials say the animal had been
out of the jungle only a few weeks - and is one of the few jungle animals that kills
for pleasure.
President Truman promises his cooperation to a forthcoming Senate
investigation into Republican charges that “at least” 57 Communists are or
recently have been at work in the State Department. Sen. McCarthy of
Wisconsin is the author of the charge of Communist penetration in the State
Department.

Kate Murtagh - a New York stage comedian and a
tall girl says if you’re a tall lady, there’s only one
solution and that’s to have a sense of humor. “It’s
no handicap to romance to be tall. Males in general
like the idea of a girl who is tall and proud of it.” She
says there are some drawbacks though. “I’ll never
forget the time I tried to be obliging when a boy
asked to kiss me goodnight. I just leaned over, lifted
him up and kissed him. I never saw him again.” She
also says don’t jitterbug if you’re taller then the
guy you are with. She tried, but banged her chin on top of his head.
For the first time - a jet lands on an aircraft carrier. Eight
Grumman Panther jets each land twice on the carrier USS
Valley Forge, for a total of 16 landings. The landing speeds
averaged 115mph. That compares to less than 90mph of
propeller-driven fighters.
Radio news - a disgruntled radio engineer is heard sounding-off against his
bosses over station KECA (790) - the ABC station in Los Angeles. He apparently
pre-recorded the dissertation where it was unknowingly inserted into a sports
program during a commercial break. He was only on the air for 20 seconds. Over
the airwaves, he was heard to say, “I’ll probably get fired for this.” According to
management, he was already given his two-week notice.
More radio news - Nathan Straus sells his New York City FM station (WMCA-FM
- 92.3) to a newly created corporation for $7,500. Strauss announced he was
closing down the station in late December because it was losing $4000 a month.
The station still remains on the air - for six hours a day, similcasting its AM
station. The new company - WYOU Inc, plans to change the call-letters to WIFE.
Television news - station WNBT (NBC-Channel 4) in New York City, says it will
add two more hours to its daytime programming. The station now signs-on at
5:15 each afternoon.
Motion picture actor “Texas Jim”
Robertson is signed by WATV (channel
13) in Newark, NJ, to host a daily
afternoon western movie program.
