Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins his first Daytona 500, the
same track where his father was killed.
Al Hurra (The Free One) - A U.S. government-financed satellite channel aimed
at Arab viewers makes its debut. The station’s first item was a news briefing that
began with a guerrilla attack on an Iraqi police station west of Baghdad in which
about two dozen were killed.

AOL and Earthlink sue a group of 16 individuals and companies, known as the
“Alabama Spammers” for spamming. Earthlink says collectively, they have sent
some 250 million pieces of illegal commercial e-mail.

Television news - NBC agrees to pay a record $2 million-plus for each episode
of a new boxing-themed show created by reality TV maestro Mark
Burnett. “The Contender” will count on Rocky star Sylvester Stallone to attract
viewers.
HBO’s “Sex and the City” is ending after six seasons. Beginning in June, you’ll be
able to see reruns on TBS and soon, DVD.
Bill Moyers (69) is leaving the PBS magazine series “Now” to write a book. “It
isn’t because I feel old. It’s because I feel compelled to do something else now,
that only I can do - which is that book.”
ABC has upped the ante as Regis Philbin
returns to the new “Super Millionaire” where the
top prize is $10 million. With “Super Millionaire”
shooting 24 hours before air time, viewers who
get the urge to join in will be able to call a toll-
free number and try to qualify before the short
run concludes.
ABC News’ Rick Kaplan is the new president of
MSNBC. He’s expected to bring a new energy
to the channel, which has changed strategies
several times without much success.
Jay Leno’s new announcer is “stuttering John” Melendez from the Howard Stern
radio show. He replaces Edd Hall, who’s leaving after 12 years to concentrate on
doing movies.
Disney purchases Jim Henson’s Muppets for $90 million.
