President Eisenhower urges Soviet leaders to come to the United States and
“learn at firsthand the feeling of our people toward peace.” It was a reply to
Soviet Premier Bulganin’s latest letter. Said the President - “I begin to wonder,
Mr. Chairman, whether we shall get anywhere by continuing to writer speeches
to each other!”
Red China Premier Chou En Lai and North Korean Premier Kim Il Sung say Red
Chinese troops will be withdrawn from North Korea by the end of the year.
Rebel unites under the direct personal command of Revolutionary Leader Fidel
Castro battle Cuban government troops in a fierce fight which could decide the
fate of the 14-month-old revolt. Casualties were reported high on both sides.
Sir Winston Churchill is stricken by pneumonia and pleurisy. He is described as
comfortable and in good spirits.
Dave Beck Sr., wealthy and once powerful union leader is
told he must to go prison for up to 15 years for stealing
$1900 from the International Teamsters Union. His son,
Dave Beck Jr., convicted of stealing $4650 from the
Teamsters, was fined $2000 and his further sentencing is
deferred for three years on condition he return the money.
Gun safety experts cringe at a photo of President
Eisenhower, depicting him on a hunting trip with a friend.
The President was sitting in a carriage with a double-barrel
shotgun between his knees, the muzzle pointed upward right at his face.
Passing - Fred Pabst (88) who help build a brewing empire. Pabst’s father, the
late Capt. Fred Pabst who gave the brewery its name, died in 1904.
A House committee reports that, “the cigarette manufacturers have deceived the
American public through their advertising of filter-tip cigarettes. They believe
manufacturers imply filter tips remove alleged causes of cancer and heart
diseases which isn’t true.
Sports - Frank Gifford of the New York Giants signs a
long-term contract to Warner Brothers, and says his
playing days may be numbered.

Entertainment news -
Gracie Allen says she is retiring from show business at the
end of the current television season. She says she wants to
spend more time at home and with her grandchildren.
CBS announces that Arthur Godfrey will star on separate
radio and television programs on weekday mornings
beginning this week. No more simulcasts.
Passing - Joe Frisco (68) - stuttering comedian.

Television news -
CBS-TV is having problems with Remington Rand, the sponsor of “Leave It to
Beaver,” who is sponsoring one-half the show. The other half is not sponsored.
Remington Rand wants a cross-plug and feels it is entitled to one, even though
CBS has been unable to come up with another client.
More cliffhangers being seen - besides
“Zorro,” “Disneyland” is the latest show to go
serial, with “ Saga of Andy Burnett ” plus
recent excursions on “Alfred Hitchcock
Presents” and “Studio One.”
Milton Berle makes his dramatic acting debut
in a “Kraft Television Theater” drama on NBC
title “Material Witness.”

Ivan Tours Productions says it does have trouble filming “Sea Hunt.” Some of the
shooting is done in a tank at Marine land, but most of it is done off the coast of
nearby Catalina. Producers say the major problem is preventing the actors from
getting seasick.
5-5:30pm - “Mickey Mouse Club” which was cut this season from 60 to 30
minutes will be further reduced next fall to a three-day schedule, Mon-Wed-Fri. In
the Tues and Thurs slots will be a new Walt Disney project, “Serial Theater.”

Radio news - After six years at WMCA, New York, Murray Kaufman is leaving to
take a DJ job at WAAT, Newark. He’ll continue his in-person shows at Palisades
Amusement Park during the summer months. Kaufman will be heard from 10:30p
to midnight.
Won’t happen - Alan Freed’s deal to do a five-day a week network radio show for
Mutual is off.
WCPO Cincinnati goes “Color Radio” top-40.
Music news - What does Alan Freed think of his
competition - Dick Clark of WFIL-TV Philadelphia?
“Clark has done a great job for the business. I wish
him a lot of luck. My 13-year-old daughter,
incidentally, watches him every day,” said Freed.
Marty Robbins sings “The Story of My Life” on the
Eddie Fisher Show over NBC-TV March 4. Marty will
also appear on the Ed Sullivan Show March 30.

Same artists - different record labels. Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Dick Clark is simply the hottest in the business right now -
ABC debuts Dick Clark’s night time popular music show this week. The entire
show is budgeted at just $15,000 and it appears to have paid-off in big ratings
with a Trendex share of 16.0. Clark has modified his daytime format with sharper
production and more name artists. Appearing were Pat Boone, Johnnie Ray,
Chuck Willis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Connie Francis and the Royal Teens. Most artists
were lip-synched. The show originates from ABC’s Little Theater in New York.
Clark commutes form Philadelphia, where he does his daily “American
Bandstand.” Some 300 teens make up the studio audience.

More Dick Clark - “American Bandstand” is
delivering 8.4 million viewers per afternoon more
than any other network show up to 5pm,
according to the January report of the American
Research Bureau. ARB says it has a 12.1 share
with a 46% adult audience.
Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon, Billy and Lilly and
Larry Williams and his band are the latest acts to
sign for the upcoming Alan Freed six-week
nationwide package tour. They join Jerry Lee
Lewis and Buddy Holly & The Crickets.
Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff and the Wilburn Brothers launch a series of Canadian
dates at Ft. Frances, Ontario.
Two versions of “Tequila” - the Champs have their version and it’s the first. But
Eddie Platt and his orchestra have a knock-off version and it’s getting played. For
instance in Cleveland, KYW jocks are playing the Champs while rival WERE is
playing the Platt version.
Record news - 45EP (Extra play) sales have jumped over the past few weeks.
78’s are sinking.
Disneyland Records launches its pop label with the formation of Vista Records.
