In Moscow, tens of thousands pay their last respects to President Yuri V.

Andropov.

Konstantin U. Chernenko (72), a Siberian peasant and a

lifelong protégé of President Leonid I. Brezhnev is chosen as the

new leader of the Soviet Union. . He replaces President Yuri V

Andropov, who died last week at the age of 69 after 15 months in

office.

President Regan signs an order to withdraw the U.S. Marine

contingent from the Beirut airport within 30 days and base it on

Navy ships offshore.

Syria rejects an 8-oint Saudi Arabian peace plan and says that only by

unconditionally scrapping its troop-withdrawal and security agreement with Israel

could Lebanon take the first step toward ending the factional conflict.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr . pleads guilty to felony heroin

possession involving an incident on an airline flight to Rapid

City. Kennedy will be sentenced on March 16.

The Justice Department says it would file suit, if necessary, to

block the proposed merger of LTV Corp. and Republic Steel

Corp. - the nation’s third and fourth largest steel firms, unless

they abandon or “significantly modify” their proposal.

Housing starts hit a 5-year high as factories operate at 79.9% - their highest

capacity in more than two years.

In Pittsburgh - Stormie Jones A 6-year-old girl suffering from life-threatening

levels of fat in her blood receives a new heart and liver in a 16-hour operation

that doctors said was the world’s first such double transplant.

Technology -

IBM unveils a portable version of its Personal Computer. The 30-pound IBM

Portable Persona Computer will be available March 1 in limited quantities at a

price of $2,795.

Music news -

Marries - Pop star Elton John to Renate

Blauel , a sound engineer. The British

singer, born Reg Dwight, declared

several years ago that he was bisexual,

but Blauel said in an interview - “He’s the

nicest guy I’ve ever met.” “I’ve heard all

sorts of stories about Elton and that he’s

supposed to be bisexual but that doesn’t

worry me.”

MTV says it banned the Rolling Stones “She Was Hot” video because it used a

can of Tab cola (blatantly too commercial) and because of a scene which

contained a man becoming excited watching dancer Anita Morris’ body gyrations.

MTV asked the band to edit the offending scenes and they’ll air the video.

Walt Disney Pictures unveils Touchstone Films, its new division for movies that

will be more “adult, mature and provocative” than the usual Disney family fare.

ABC runs third to the other tow major television networks

in the ratings with prime-time programming consisting

almost entirely of the Winter Olympic Games from

Sarajevo.

Arriving in LA for a press

conference, the five members of

Duran Duran insist that their

popularity is due as much to

musical values as to their video

presence or fashion-conscious

image. They insist they are not just

a video band.

WTBS - the Atlanta Superstation is

pulling the country video clip show

“America’s Music Tracks” after 15

weeks on the air. One of the

reasons, not enough country videos

are being made.

Radio news - ABC Watermark cancels “Soundtrack of the 1960’s” which is

hosted by Gary Owens. The show debuted in 1980 with the late Murray the K.

Dan Ingram and Ron Lundy, long associated with WABC when it played music,

sue WHTZ for $5 million in a civil suit that says the station used their names,

voice and styles in the context of a promotional endorsement for the station.

Country WKHK New York goes Light FM and WLTW

KSDO-FM San Diego will begin using “Hot Hits” on the air, same as sister

Gannett station KIIS-FM just north in Los

Angeles.

WZKS (96.3) Nashville goes top-40 with a

Hot Hits sound.

WZUU Milwaukee goes top-40.
