In sports - Sugar Ray Leonard (34) retains his WBC title - defeating Terry Norris

by unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden. After the bout, Leonard

announced that his 15-year pro career was over. Norris knocked him down twice

in the twelve rounds with one judge having Norris winning every round. Leonard

began his boxing career after winning a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. He

retires as boxing’s all-time career earner at

$110 million.

Pitcher Roger Clemens becomes the highest-paid player in baseball - agreeing

to play again with the Boston Red Sox in a four-year contract - worth

$21,521,000

In radio news - because of a steady plunge in the

ratings, “Pirate Radio” (100.3) in Los Angles changes

formats. Conceived by programmer Scott Shannon, the

format was a mix of hard rock, Top-40 and dance music.

“Pirate Radio” debuted March 17, 1989 and almost

immediately - shot the station from the bottom of the

ratings to #5 (where it peaked). Coming off of incredible

success with Z-100 (WHTZ-100.3) in New York -

Shannon and owner Westwood One had the best-

known debut in music radio history. Steven Butler - the editor of Inside Radio

said of the debut “There was so much build-up about it. The industry was on the

edge of their chairs when Shannon came on. It was kind of this primal radio that

turned a lot of radio people on.” The station peaked at a 5.5 share in the summer

of 1989. In the most recent ratings book - Pirate Radio had a 2.7 share. After his

last show with the station - Shannon said, “You’re never surprised in this

business. Still, I take things like this very seriously. I feel we had a plan and we

were going to do it and they pulled the rug out at the last minute.” The new

format will be album-oriented rock. Although the “Pirate Radio” moniker will be

dropped - the call letters KQLZ will remain.

Actor Kirk Douglas and Noel Blanc (son of the late Mel Blanc) survive along with

another man in a helicopter crash in Santa Paula, California. The crash occurred

just after the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter lifted off the airport helipad. The copter

flew into the pathway of the airport’s only runway and into the path of a small

plane. Both men on the plane were killed.
