Upstate New York from Albany to Buffalo gets hit with its biggest snowstorm
since 1925. Drifts up to 15 feet blocked some highways. Hundreds of persons
are stranded with at least 10 deaths reported.
In a recent Gallup Poll, Senator John Kennedy
would win if the election were being held this week
with Kennedy at 49% and Nixon at 38%.
A German rocket scientist, held by the Russians
for the past 13 years says the Russians aren’t
kidding when they say they have intercontinental
ballistic missiles. Peter Lertes was one of the
scientists returned to West Germany with nine
colleagues who were finally allowed out after the
13-year period.
New York mayor Robert Wagner bars 10-year-old Eddie Hodges, current cast
member of Broadway’s “Music Man, from appearing on the Perry Como TV show
this week. The decision was based on a recommendation by the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children (SPCC). They said Hodges was already
working a matinee and evening performances for the Broadway show. Hodges
would have made $750 for the 15-minute appearance.
French Actress Brigitte Bardot is resting in Northern
Italy after a nervous breakdown. French and Italian
newspapers reported she took an overdose of
sleeping pills two days ago in a suicide attempt.
The seven month-old daughter of composer Nelsen
Riddle dies before the parents can get her to the
hospital. The family doctor said the baby had died
from an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. “She was
just a baby and she had no defense against it,” said
the father of the sudden virus.
In sports - Dodger Roy (Campy) Campanella remains in a Glen Cove, NY
hospital amid growing concern that he will never be able to walk again.
Campanella was removed from the wreckage of his car on January 28, suffering
from a broken neck and temporary paralysis... The Chicago White Sox sign
second-baseman Nellie Fox for a record salary of $40 thousand and pitcher Billy
Pierce for $35 thousand.

General Motors engineers demonstrate a car steered by an electrical cable
beneath a concrete surface. To turn off the road or to pass another vehicle, a
switch was thrown to put the car back into manual. “We think of it as the first
building block in what may become a more sophisticated system for controlling
vehicle spacing, detecting location of cars of giving the driver signals for throttle
and brake control.”

Radio news -
A few weeks ago, KWK, St. Louis (1380)
dumped rock ‘n’ roll by having their disc
jockeys break RnR records over the air,
so listeners could hear the crunch. KWK
President Robert Convey said, “I decided
on this action after conferring with our
disk jockeys and finding their complete
agreement that rock ‘n’ roll has
dominated the popular music field long enough.”
Murray Kaufman, recently heard on WMCA, moves to Newark’s WAAT (970).
He’s heard from 10:30p to midnight. (Murray’s about to go to WINS and become
Murray the K).
Speaking of New York, WINS is racking up some great ratings. From a slow fifth,
six or seventh place before last summer, WINS has creeped into a strongly
competitive position with programmer Mel Leeds and a new format - top-40 pop
hits. The station runs second now, just under WNEW.
Music news - The Johnny Otis Show is signed
for a four-week tour of Great Britain staring April
6… Paul Anka (16) just returned from a quick
tour of Australia along with Jerry Lee Lewis, the
Crickets and Jody Sands. He’s on the Ed Sullivan
Show this week.
Decca Records will now carry new music by The
Shirelles. The group had originally been with the Tiara label.
Folksingers are making a comeback. Some of the
more popular ones are Theodore Bikel , Josh
White, Cynthia Gooding, Susan Reed, Oscar
Brand, Bob Gibson, Richard Dyer-Bennett and

Records, reports that his folk discs have been doubling annually. Elektra has
Theodore Bikel, Susan Reed and Josh White.
Still banned in many places, this week, singer Paul
Robeson (60) performs at the Oakland (CA)
Auditorium. Robeson has made a number of
appearances in California churches recently, but big
halls will not book him.
Walt Disney is setting up a new record label - Vista
Records. The first two albums due for release will be
“An Evening With Mary Martin” and “Melodies For
Midnight” Actor James Mason also has been signed
for two albums.
Television news - Allen Funt is creating a new television version of his “Candid
Camera” which had a network run a few years ago and is currently re-running in
syndication.
Walt Disney, who now does 26 new hours and 26 repeats on ABC-TV’s
“Disneyland” may change the pattern to 39 new episodes come fall.
