overthrown and arrested by his top military commander in Paraguay.
President Bush unveils a four-point program to shore up the ailing U.S. savings
and loan industry - a plan financed in part by $50 billion in government bonds.
Reacting to public outrage, Congress votes to reject a $45,000 pay increase
hours before it was scheduled to take effect.
Defense Secretary designate John Tower denies
to senators that he has a drinking problem and
described himself as “a man of some discipline.’
Vice President Dan Quayle criticizes former
President Jimmy Carter for holding discussions with
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega saying “it has a
chance of complicating matters.’
The EPA’s administrator-designate William Reilly
declares that a “new era” is coming to the agency
and the Bush Administration will introduce a
comprehensive clean air bill with a strong acid rain
provision in the near future.
The U.S. Food and drug Administration will approve widespread distribution
aerosol pentamidine - shown to prevent pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, the
most common life-threatening infection seen in AIDS patients.
Diane in NY - Britain’s Princess Diana meets with the poor and homeless on
Manhattan’s Lower East side before hurrying back uptown to the world’s fanciest
toy store.
Yugo’s U.S. importer files for bankruptcy protection. Sales of the car dropped
about 35% in 1988 from 1987.
Nintendo of America is sued by archrival Atari Corp, which accuses Nintendo of
unfairly monopolizing the billion-dollar video game market.

producer. He had been married to actress Gena
Rowlands since 1958. He died from
complications of cirrhosis of the liver and had
been in poor health for three years.

Bruce Oppenheim separate after being married
about two years.

Saturday Night Live this week - Tom Hanks is
guest host with musical guest Keith Richards.
Near Hollywood - Actor Todd Bridges is arrested
for investigation of attempted murder after allegedly shooting another man five
times. He’s had several previous brushes with the law.
Moving over from CBS to ABC, Diane Sawyer will substitute-anchor “World News
Tonight” and “Nightline’ - but her main function is to co-anchor a new prime-time
news series with Sam Donaldson.
