Overcoming objections he is taking on too much power, Mikhail Gorbachev wins
broad new authority to help him halt the Soviet Union’s slide into chaos, including
direct presidential control over the government and a key new council of regional
leaders.
Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev picks
Gennady I. Yanayev
as his Vice President. Said
the nominee, “I am a Communist to the depths of
my heart.”
President Bush, faced with a bipartisan opposition
to his plan for an early military strike against Iraq,
will meet with key members of Congress to
discuss the issue. It all hedges on Iraq’s January 15 U.N. deadline.
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein knocks down speculation that he might pull his
troops out of Kuwait before a January 15 U.N. deadline for withdrawal.
Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, imposes a 5% sales tax on all consumer
goods and services. Apparently the Soviet budget for 1991 is in trouble and is
struggling.
Russian President Boris Yelstin, cuts his republic’s contribution to the national
budget by 85%, threatening the whole country with imminent economic collapse,
according to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.
President Bush, after weighing the political and military consequences of further
delay, decides that the United States should move quickly to launch a massive
military attack on Iraqi forces if Iraq fails to withdraw from Kuwait by the U.N.
imposed deadline of January 15.

embraces Islam and disavows parts of his novel “The
Satanic Verses.” He says he feels safer now, after

leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, angrily
accused him of blasphemy against Islam and offered
a $1 million to anyone who would kill him.

Kimba Wood
- the judge who slammed Michael Milken
with a 10-year prison sentence is getting a ton of praising
fan mail. Milken’s sentence was the longest term given to
any of the defendants caught up in Wall Street’s long
running inside trading scandal.
Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rules that the death
sentence issued last year against British author Salman
Rushdie remains in force. Khamenei issued a statement
several days after Rushdie renounced his novel “The
Satanic Verses.” The late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued the death edict in
February 1989. Many Muslims believe the novel is blasphemous.
