South Africa - 53 people die in fierce fighting between thousands of feuding Zulu
and Pondo tribesmen armed with spears, machetes and homemade guns.
President Reagan plans a traditional Christmas at the White House and
telephones holiday greetings to give servicemen stationed overseas and orders
the lights of the national Christmas tree dimmed in honor of Americans held
hostage in Lebanon.
Terrorists hurling hand grenades and firing Soviet-made assault rifles turn
Christmas-decorated airports in Vienna and Rome into carnage. 18 are dead and
117 wounded.
The U.S. warns Israel not to retaliate for terrorist killings in the Rome and Vienna
airports, warning against “an escalation of violence on either side.”
President Reagan receives a sport coat from Nancy during the first Couple‟s fifth
Christmas day inn the White House.
In Johannesburg - police pull over black activist Winnie
Mandela’s car and arrested her for the second time in eight
days, whisking her of into custody as she tied to return to her
Johannesburg home in defiance of a state order expelling her
from the city.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff send President Reagan a list of
possible military options to use against terrorists in the Mideast,
including U.S. air strikes at Libya, government sources reveal.

For only the second time in the 26 seasons they have co-existed - the New York
Jets and New York Giants are in the National Football League playoffs.
Music news -
One of the surprises of the year comes from record label
TVT that released “Television‟s Greatest Hits.” The
album, which hit #135 on the Billboard album charts has
sold more than 200,000 copies. Not bad for a new
independent label.
The Hooters, Starship Charlie Sexton and others are
slated to appear at MTV‟s fifth annual New Year‟s Eve
bash.

country videos, VH-1 will launch a multi-hour weekly video
program titled “Quiet Storm. It all begins early next year.
Says Kevin Metheny , vice president of VH-1 - the show will
spotlight videos from “alternative music” and or new age.
