Secretary of State George Shultz reacts to the White Houses’
plan to give lie detector tests to holders of classified information.
“The minute in the government that I’m told that I’m trusted is the
day that I leave.” He said that lie detector tests are not reliable and
can implicate innocent people.
A federal judge declares a mistrial in the racketeering and fraud
trial of Governor Edwin Edwards of Louisiana. The jury was
deadlocked and could not reach a verdict.
A twin-engine light plane slams into a busy shopping mall in Concord, CA -
exploding in flames and killing at least three and injuring 50 others.
Walt Disney Productions announces that France will be the next Disneyland
place. The location selected is Marne-la-Vallee, 16 miles east of Paris. Spain
was in the bidding as well - with Disney considering four sites on the country’s
eastern Mediterranean coast.
Howard Cosell (65) quits ABC television after 20 years. He’ll
continue to do his sports commentaries on ABC radio
In Fargo, baseball great Roger Maris is eulogized by some of
his former Yankee teammates in snowy weather. Mickey
Mantle, Whitey Ford, Clete Boyer and Bill Skowron were some
of the pallbearers. Marris died last Saturday at 51 of lymphatic
cancer after a two-year battle.
Doug Llewelyn , senior vice-president of the Westgate group
announces his production company will broadcast the opening
of Al Capone’s Vault on live television, April 14. The vault is in
the basement of a South Side hotel in Chicago and was
discovered by a group renovating the building. “There could
be bodies ... Capone was one of the kings of the underworld.”
It’s discovered that beloved movie and television actress Donna Reed (64) is
hospitalized with pancreatic cancer. Doctors say they will release her in time for
Christmas.
Actor Gary Coleman (17) is in good condition after being fitted with a dialysis
pack to supplement his second transplanted kidney. He’ll carry the pack under
his clothing. He’ll return to Diff’rent Strokes in January.
