(FEMA).
Former Vice President Al Gore says he will not run for President again. “I’ve
decided that I will not be a candidate for president in 2004.”
U.N. experts say Iraq has failed to prove that
it has no weapons of mass destruction.
Meantime, Secretary of State
Colin Powell
asserts that a consensus is emerging at the
U.N. Security Council that Iraqi President
Saddam Hussein failed to come clean on his
weapons of mass destruction programs in the
arms declaration that Baghdad recently
submitted. Powell later said that there would
be “no second chance” for Iraq to correct its
massive arms declaration and avoid a military
intervention.
A defiant President Hugo Chavez rules out
early elections as a solution to Venezuela’s
deepening political crisis. He vowed to outlast
a nationwide strike that has crippled his
country’s oil production.
A U.N report says that Al Qaeda continues to command an extensive network of
well-financed terrorist operatives in 40 countries and has opened new training
camps in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border to prepare a new
generation of Islamic extremists for attacks on the West.
President Bush orders the Pentagon to deploy a rudimentary missile defense
system that will place interceptor missiles in Alaska and in California. He wants it
done by 2004.
Senate Republican leader Trent Lott resigns his post after a racial remark - one
he thought he would survive.
Four boys, between 7 and 11 plunge through the ice of the Merrimack River in
Lawrence, Massachusetts and die.
