Foreign Ministers of the United States, France, West German and Britain join in a
statement re-affirming their countries’ determination to remain in Berlin.
President Eisenhower suggests adding one or two years of high school to the
United States educational system and also suggests that working mothers think
twice before putting a business career ahead of the personal care of her kids.
A Thor ballistic missile takes off from Vandenberg in California. It’s the first
missile ever launched by the Air Force.
The United States places a four-ton Atlas missile into orbit
containing a satellite that dwarfs Russia’s Sputnik III.
President Eisenhower personally announced the feat at a
White House diplomatic dinner and authorized Press
Secretary Hagerty to announce it to the world.
Voice From Space - The voice of President Eisenhower
broadcasting a Christmas wish for peace on earth and
goodwill to all men is heard from the giant four-and-a-half-
ton Atlas satellite orbiting in outer space. The tape-recorded
words were heard on 132.45 and 132.905mhz on the VHF
radio band. Upon hearing his message piped through by
loudspeaker, the President was fascinated. “That’s one of
the astounding things in this age of inventions,” he mused. “Next thing they’ll do
is televise pictures.”
Premier Khrushchev demands that Soviet farmers out-produce the United States.
Business - American Telephone and Telegraph - the world’s biggest public utility
offers shareowners a 3-1 stock split. AT&T closed up $21 at $223 a share.
Entertainment -
French actress Brigitte Bardot objects to use of her
name in association with a nude girlie show in Paris.
The bosomy actress told a court she was
embarrassed to have a music hall review use her
name in its title. The name of the review is “Ca Va
Bardot” (translated means OK Bardot). Ms. Bardot
claims the girls in the show “look like me and use
indecent expressions.”

ABC - Zorro - Del Amo disguises himself as
Zorro and is captured by Sgt. Garcia who
prepares to hang him.
Music news -
Imperial Records signs teen vocal group “The
Teddy Bears” to a recording contract. They have
a huge hit titled
“To Know Him Is
To Love Him.”
Group consists of Annette Bard (16), Phil Spector
(18) and Marshall Lieb (19). The group appears
on the NBC-TV Perry Como Show January 3.
The fastest moving chart record of the year is
“The Chipmunk Song” with sales so far of 2.5
million.
Satire - Stan Freeberg’s recording - an assault on
advertising called “Green Christmas” has been
banned on some radio stations.
Radio news - Gene Weed, formerly with WQAM,
Miami until drafted last May, is assigned to the
Armed Forces Radio and Television service in Hollywood and also lands a part-
time shift at KFWB, Hollywood.
Don’t miss Bing Crosby’s annual Christmas radio show on New Year’s. The show
will feature remote pick-ups from around the world including the famed Vatican
Choir and the sound of St. Peter’s bells summoning those to midnight mass.
