The Florida Supreme Court throws the election into another turmoil and orders a
statewide recount of selected ballots. George Bush leads by 154 votes. Bush
moved to block the decision, asking the Supreme Court for a temporary delay in
the recount until an appeal could be filed.
Calling a halt to the counting of Florida’s disputed votes - A divided U.S.
Supreme Court clears the way for Texas Gov. George W. Bush to become the
nation’s 43
rd
president, overturning a Florida Supreme Court decision allowing
the hand tabulations sought by Vice President Gore.
After 36 days - the wait is over as
George
Bush
is named the next President of the United
States. Bush said, “Our nation must rise above a
house divided.”
Vice President-elect Dick Cheney begins
pushing a start to George Bush’s agenda of
cutting taxes, shoring up the military, reforming
Social Security and improving education.
Michael Milken - who went to prison for stock
fraud and since his release has become known
as a philanthropist, asks President Clinton to
pardon him.
Unemployment rises slightly to 4%.
Technology -
RealNetworks - a leading provider of software for delivering audio and video
over the Internet, is expected to release upgrades that will improve the reliability
and quality of Web broadcasts. “RealSystem IQ” will allow webcasters to reach
larger audiences by increasing the number of viewers who can connect to each
server while enabling multiple networks of servers to deliver the same feed.
Sports -
The Texas Rangers sign Seattle shortstop Alex Rodriquez to the largest contact
in the history of pro-sports - $252 million over 10 years.

Passing - Actor George Montgomery. He was 84.

More trouble as actor Robert Downey Jr. is charged with felony possession of
cocaine, felony possession of the prescription depressant diazepam (Valium) and
being under the influence of a controlled substance.
Madonna will marry British actor Guy Ritchie in Scotland on December 22.
Music news - Hundreds of John Lennon devotees make their annual pilgrimage
to Central Park to sing and reminisce about him some 20 years after his death.
Television news -
The Fox Family Channel orders 26 episodes of a new Mary-Kate and Ashley
comedy to debut this summer. The series is still unnamed.
