Surgeons replace the dying heart of
Barney Clark
, a 61-
year-old dentist with the first permanent artificial heart
implanted in a human. The historic operation took place at
the University of Utah.
The nation’s unemployment leaps from 10.4% to 10.8%.
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy takes himself out of the 1984
presidential run - a decision he attributed for concern of his
children and divorce proceedings that are wrenching his family.
Latin trip - President Reagan meets with President Efrain Rios Montt of
Guatemala and promises U.S. support for the military ruler’s battle against leftist
guerrillas.
President Reagan scraps the idea of asking Congress to speed imposition of the
1984 tax cut scheduled for July 1 and instead, will stress a hike in the gasoline
levy,
Update - Artificial heart recipient Barney Clark suffers seizures that placed him in
critical condition and doctors are testing for brain damage.
Kevin John Masterson, who surrendered to the FBI for questioning in the Tylenol
poisonings and “went berserk” when jail inmates accused him of the killings,
waives extradition for return to Illinois.
Greeting card publishers say nostalgic themes are among the most popular
designs in this year’s Christmas greeting cards. Teddy bears, adaptations from
“The Night Before Christmas” and engravings from the Dickensian Era are
popular.

Howard Cosell
insists he is disgusted by the
present state of foxing and says he will never be a
commentator for another professional fight. “I love
amateur boxing and if the company wants me to, I
would do Olympic boxing. But professional, no. I
have walked away from it. I am past the point where
I want to be a part of it. I don’t want to be a party to
the hypocrisy, the sleaziness… I’m worn out by it,”
said Cosell.
Media - Sportscaster Vin Scully - best known for
his LA Dodgers broadcasts on the West Coast,
signs a multiyear contract with NBC that will pay
him $1 million per year. The contract calls for Scully
to do play-byplay on 28 baseball game-of-the-week telecasts as well as playoff
and World Series games. He’ll also be involved in the network’s golf coverage.
A 2,000-ft television and FM radio tower collapses killing five and injuring three
others who were working on the structure. The tower is located on the edge of
Houston, TX and was to be used by nine FM stations and KTXH television in
Houston.
Entertainment -
British comic Marty Feldman (48) collapses and dies while finishing a new motion
picture in Mexico. He collapsed and died in his hotel room, shortly after returning
fro the set of “Yellowbeard.”

- Ozzy Osbourne releases a live album of old Black Sabbath music.
Rock FM stations got a jump on the new Led Zeppelin
album “Coda.” The much anticipated album was played, in
some cases - 10 days before its official release -
something Atlantic Records was not happy about.
Television news -
CBS airs a Carol Burnett tribute with over 100 celebrities in
gather. Look for Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, Sammy Davis Jr.,
Steve Lawrence, Jack Paar, Burt Reynolds, James Stewart
and others.

Carol Kane comes aboard as a regular cast member of “Taxi” but the ratings of
the series aren’t that good. NBC airs the show Thursday nights.
In its first major commitment to public television, General Electric makes a 42.5
million grant in support of “Inside Story” which has been off the air since April to
lack of funding.
