Republican convention in Dallas - Ronald Reagan
accepts the republican nomination with a partisan
attack on the Democratic Party. “We’re accused of
having a secret. Well, if we have, it is that we’re
going to keep the mighty engine of the nation revved
up.” Said Reagan.
India - Two states are crippled by general strikes
and more than a million people stage rallies across the nation to protest Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi’s dismissal of an opposition state government.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee says that Iran has the capability to
temporarily blockade the Persian Gulf oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz,
but that such a move would be a desperation act.
President Reagan orders NASA to conduct a nationwide search for a
schoolteacher to be the first citizen-passenger to ride a space shuttle.
After weeks of not-so-good news, Walter F. Mondale wins the unequivocal
support of 50 of the nation’s black Democrats beginning with Jesse Jackson.
John Anderson, former Illinois Republican who made a run in the 1980
campaign, endorses Democrat Walter Mondale.
A mother and her three small children are among seven dead when a car
careened onto a sidewalk near a crowded bus stop in Washington. The driver of
the car, Robert Williams was charged with six counts of vehicular homicide,
driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He’s listed in serious condition.
A French cargo ship, carrying 450 tons of radioactive material to the Soviet
Union, collides with a ferry off the Belgian coast and sinks.
New at McDonalds - A bacon-double-cheeseburger; Chicken McSwiss and
Cheddar Melt.
Vanessa Williams says she also posed nude for
another photographer. Now Bob Guccione, Penthouse
publisher, says he does intend to publish the second set
of pictures in the magazine’s January, 1985 issue. Ms.
Williams acknowledged that she had signed a model’s
release before she posed for the second photographer,

Greg Whitmarr. She denied, however, that she had signed such a form for Tom
Chiapel, whose pictures of Williams appeared in the September issue of
Penthouse. Both sets of pictures were taken during the summer of 1982.
Technology - Atari Corp says it will begin selling more powerful computers for
the home and office at “rock bottom prices” in 1985 and expects a return to
profitability by the end of this year.
AT&T says it will eliminate 11,000 management and blue collar jobs nationwide
by early next year as part of its continuing effort to control costs.

Keith Hernandez doubles in Danny Heep from first with none out in the ninth to
give the New York Mets a 3-2 victory and a three-game sweep over the Dodgers.
Looks like the USFL will play its third and final spring season in 1985, then switch
to a fall slate in 1986 and competing directly with the NFL. Good luck!

One up - Just as soon as Ted Turner announced he was launching a video
channel, MTV announces it is launching a second music channel.
