Troops loyal to President Corazon Aquino crush the gravest coup attempt
against her 18-month-old government after 20 hours of vicious street fighting that
turned Manila into a war zone.
Top Nicaraguan rebel leaders tell President Reagan that the contras could fight
until a scheduled Nov. 7 cease-fire without new U.S. military aid, but they asked
for an “escrow’ account to be tapped should the region’s shaky peace plans
collapse.
Robert Earl, a former aide to Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, tells congressional
investigators that he helped North destroy documents crucial to the Iran-contra
affair that North told him as the affair unraveled that he had asked atty. Gen
Edwin Meese III to delay his investigation.
Vice President George Bush , under fire
from other Republican presidential aspirants
for refusing to debate them, announces that
he would participate in a televised forum in
October.
The National Organization for Women will sit
out the 1988 presidential election unless
Colorado Rep. Patricia Schroeder or another
candidate acceptable to the group decides to
run, NOW president Molly Yard says.

star? -
Debbie Gibson , whose 17, has her first hit with
“Only In My Dreams” and her first album is on
the way - “Out of the Blue.” Debbie’s from
Merrick, Long Island. She said she wrote “Only
In My Dreams” when she was 14 (and in only 15
minutes) and since, she has written about 200
songs! “I can write a song in 10 to 20 minutes. It
appears in my head and then I write it down and
get it out. I do some editing, but not much.”

Passing - director John Huston (81) He suffered from
emphysema for years and died at a home he was renting
near the filming sit of “Mr. North.” which he was co-
producing.
“Dynasty” star Joan Colllins wins a divorce from former
rock star Peter Holm and then tells reporters she never will
marry again. “ I don’t need a husband,” she quipped. “I
need a wife.”
Television news -
Looks like Michael J. Fox will have a
girlfriend on “Family Ties” and she’ll be
played by Courteney Cox . Ms. Cox is best
known for appearing in Bruce Springsteen’s
“Dancing in the Dark” video.
