At the Republican National Convention in San
Francisco, both President Eisenhower and VP Nixon
win renomination. Both said they “were honored and
thrilled” to be renominated. Nixon then flew back to
Southern
California to be
with his ailing
father.
In Dallas, water
is selling for as
high as fifty
cents-a-gallon
due to an
ongoing drought.
Dallas is using a large amount of salty water
from the Red River as its normal reservoir
supply dwindles because of the drought,
which stretches back to 1947. In comparison, crude oil from the state is selling at
about seven cents-a-gallon.
Irving Berlin rolls out yet another song for the Eisenhower campaign. Four years
ago, he wrote “I Like Ike” - the official GOP campaign song. His 1956 offering is
“Ike - for Four More Years.”
Alfredo Antonini , Italian-born musical director of CBS
says he will record a 12-minute symphonic poem “Portrait
of Ike” this week for use in President Eisenhower’s
forthcoming campaign.
Mrs John F. Kennedy loses the baby she was
expecting in October. A spokesman at a
Newport, RI hospital says she underwent an
emergency operation and is in good condition.
Weds - Heiress Gloria Vanderbilt to Sidney
Lumet, a television director. Both are 32. Miss
Vanderbilt married twice previously. On her 21st birthday,
she inherited $5 million from her father, Reginald Vanderbilt
who died when she was an infant.

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright says he is working on plans
for a 510-story mile-high office building he hopes will be built
on Chicago’s lakefront. If the structure, which will be called
“the Illinois,” ever gets built, it will be the tallest structure in
the world.

MGM completes the sale of seven-year
rights to a film library of 725 pre-1948
pictures to TV stations in a dozen cities
for $20 million. Films include favorites
such as “Mutiny On The Bounty” and
Goodbye Mr. Chips . The sale is
described as the biggest single day’s
business in the history of the
entertainment business. For color
television, each station must work out
separate terms with MGM-TV. The
stations are - WCBS-TV (Channel 2), New York, WBBM (Channel 2), Chicago,
WXIX-TV in Milwaukee. Also affected are St Louis and Hartford, where CBS has
applied for TV stations.

Also in the deal, The Triangle Stations - owned by Walter Annenberg: WFIL-TV
Philadelphia (Channel 6), WNHC-TV(Channel 8), New Haven, WMBS in
Binghamton and WFBG in Altoona. Count these stations in - KTTV, Los Angeles,
KING-TV, Seattle and KGW-TV in Portland, OR.

The $10 million Disneyland Hotel opens next to the park in Anaheim, California.
The hotel features several gourmet restaurants and lounges and an Olympic-size
swimming pool.
Sonny Fox , master of ceremonies of TV’s “the $64,000
Challenge” is fired apparently for committing one blooper too
many. Fox has been in hot water several times this year for
committing errors on the big money giveaway show. Ralph Story
from Los Angeles replaces Fox. It comes at a good time for
Story, who just left the morning show at radio KNX, Los Angeles,
replaced by Bob Crane.
