In San Diego, Bob Dole gets the
Republican Party nod for the
presidential nomination. He
promised sweeping tax cuts to
revive America’s economy and old-
time leadership o reverse - what he
termed the country’s moral slide.
Later, he chooses Jack Kemp as
his running mate.
Mexico’s attorney general fires over
700 members of the judicial police
in an attempt to reform Mexico’s
biggest drug-fighting force.
Reform party officials announce that Ross Perot will carry the party’s banner in
the fall campaign for the White House. He told a cheering crowd at Valley Forge,
PA - “Thank you for creating a Reform party. I am honored and I am humbled
that you have chosen me as you candidate to be president.
Mamoru Konno, president of Sanyo’s Video Component Corp USA, is released
by kidnappers near Tijuana after his company paid a $2 million ransom.
President Clinton signs a bill raising the minimum wage another 90 cents an
hour.
Technology - Netscape introduces
Navigator 3.0. It will search out
content from the Internet based on
users’ specified interests and
deliver it to the personal
computers. It also includes
technology to carry three-
dimensional video electronic mail.
Hollywood news - “Lost Paradise” - a Sandra Bullock film made seven years
ago - way before her current popularity, will be released early next year. Should
be interesting.
Television news - Martha Stewart’s weekly show “Martha Stewart Living” is
going to be produced daily beginning next TV season.

Westinghouse/CBS will launch a cable channel by early next year. The channel,
called “Eye On The People,” will focus on historical and contemporary
personalities in and out of the news. (This never happened).
TV comebacks - so far, there has been
Michael J. Fox in “Spin City,” Ted Danson in
“Ink” and CBS reaches an agreement with
Arsenio Hall and is expected to come up with a
series for him soon. Hall has taken a long
vacation after ending his late night talkshow.
He’s been developing movies and is ready to
go back to TV.
Barbara Walters tapes the first interview with
Margot Kidder since she was found dazed and
confused in a Southern California backyard -
back in April.
For the second time in a row, Dennis Miller will
host the annual MTV Video Music Awards. Watch it September 4.
VH1 gets a talk show -
The RuPaul Show
- will debut
October 12 on Saturday nights.
A & E is looking into the possibility of creating a “Biography”
channel - the network’s top rated show.
This week - “VH1 Presents the ‘70’s” - a five part
documentary series told in part with music from the decade.
CBS is promoting “Big Comedy Monday” on September 16 with the debut of Bill
Cosby’s new show “Cosby” and Ted Danson’s “Ink” along with Rhea Perlman in
“Pearl.”
