The Iraqi military orders all Americans and Brits in occupied Kuwait to report to

two luxury hotels, and officials fear a hostage crisis of the worst proportions.

The Pentagon requests permission to call up as many as 150,000 members of

the National Guard and other reserve unites to meet shortages of support troops

that are developing as a result of the massive U.S. military deployment in the

Persian Gulf. President Bush is said to be considering the action.

President Bush declares that the 3,000 Americans detained in Iraq and Kuwait

“are, in fact, hostages” and that he holds the Iraqi government of Saddam

Hussein responsible for their safety.

A jury finds Yusef Salaam and Antron McCray, both 16 and Raymond Santana,

15, guilty of rape and assault on the investment banker as she jogged in the park

in April, 1989.

Passing - Singer Pearl Bailey . She was 72.

Sports - Mark McGwire hits a grand slam in the 10 th

inning at Oakland. His 400-foot-plus shot makes him

the first player to hit 30 or more homers in his first four

full seasons.

In order to comply with a restriction imposed by the

National Football League, ESPN chops Pete Axhelm’s

popular Sunday segment which picks pro football

games against the Las Vegas point spreads. The

restriction requires that commentators refrain from any

mention of the point spreads during football broadcasts

or NFL-sanctioned pregame or postgame shows.

Television news -

Connie Sellecca , who was supposed to begin her new

series “Baby Talk,” a new ABC comedy, is out. The

show is based on the popular movie, “Look Who’s

Talking.” The comedy co-stars George Clooney.

New stunt on David Letterman’s late night NBC show -

“Smashing Things With A Train.” Dave and crew were in

Connecticut to film a locomotive engine smashing things

such as melons, fish tanks filled with guacamole and an

ice sculpture.

Kathie Lee Gifford wins TV Guide’s “Most Beautiful Woman On TV” survey.

Music news - Geffen Records announces that it will not distribute the debut

album by Houston rappers the Geto Boys because of offensive content. The

album was to be disturbed by Geffen for Def American Records, the same label

that includes controversial comedian Andrew Dice Clay.

Passing - Lew DeWitt - original member of the Statler Brothers. He was 52.

Curtis Mayfield (48) is paralyzed from the neck down

and remains in serious condition after being hit b a lighting

scaffold blown down by a gust of wind during an outdoor

Brooklyn, NY concert. Seven others were also injured.

Jo Bogaert, founder of Technotronic says he’s “pumped-

up” the Belgium group has a huge dance hit in the U.S. -

“Pump Up the Jams.” “It was very difficult for us to export

music to other countries. But some of my dance records

were popular in U.S. dance clubs and I knew that if I

hooked up with the right people, I could make a record that would be a hit in the

U.S.” Technotronic is heading out and they’ll open for Madonna on her new tour.

Shades of the 1960’s… Mix of music and a TV

series -

“Guys Next Door” - five teen boys who

are the stars of a new Saturday morning NBC

live-action show, will be backed up by the August

27 release of the group’s debut album. The single

“I Was Made For You” is now out. NBC has

ordered 18 episodes of the show, which features

the guys in a number of comedy vignettes and

two musical numbers per show. SBK is their

record label. Once Brandon Tartikoff committed to the series, a number of record

companies came calling. The show debuts September 1.

All members of Soul II Soul are injured in a bus crash in suburban Chicago and

as a result, the group has canceled the rest of their concert tour.

Radio news - News/talk WCAU-AM (1210) Philadelphia ends

operations for good. The station laid-off 35 staffers and will

become WOGL-AM, and will simply similcast WOGL-FM.

Gone include former mayor Frank Rizzo , who did a talk show

on the station.

Longtime KIIS-FM (Los Angeles) PD Gerry DeFrancesco,

returns to his hometown of Philadelphia and will program

WSNI (Sunny 104.5).

Bob Arthur - half the longtime Ken & Bob morning show on KABC Los Angeles

will be leaving September 14. Roger Barkley, formerly of “Lohman and Barkley”

is set to take his place.
