Changes in Poland - The President of Poland is expected to offer Tadeusz

Mazowiecki, a longtime communist opposition activist, as premier.

President Bush condemns the assassination of the leading Colombian

presidential candidate and said, “The narco-traffickers who again have robbed

Colombia of a courageous leader must be defeated.”

Hashemi Rafsanjani is sworn-in as the new President

of Iran. He said he would help gain the release of

Western hostages in Lebanon, but only if the U.S.

adopts a friendlier stance toward the Islamic Republic.

In Bogota, Columbia - Police raid the estates of cocaine

barons seizing aircraft, cars and cattle, bringing the

number of those arrested in three days to more than

1,000.

At least 29 are confirmed dead with dozens missing in

London after a 1,500-ton dredging ship ran over the top

of a Thames river party boat full of disco-dancing people celebrating the birthday

of a friend. Police arrested the captain and first mate of the dredge ship

Bowbelle. One of those missing is the center of the party - a 26-year-old man.

The state of Alaska sues Exxon Corp. and six other oil companies alleging

negligence for failing to prevent and clean up the nation’s worst oil spill March 24.

Some 11 million gallons of crude oil in Price William Sound were spilled from the

tanker Valdez.

City officials in Philadelphia announce that due to structural decay and

maintenance problems, John F. Kennedy stadium would close. Demolition is

favored.

AIDS update - Federal health officials say that the antiviral drug AZT has been

shown to delay onset of the disease in certain groups of infected patients who

have not yet developed symptoms.

Sports - Pete Rose gets off a shoving incident with umpire Joe West during a

game. He will not be fined or suspended.

Music news -

MTV says it will air Cher’s “ If I Could Turn Back Time ” at night

only, saying the singer shows a little too much “tush” in the clip.

The Rolling Stones will perform at Shea Stadium as part of their

“Steel Wheels” tour. It’s the first rock ‘n’ roll concert at the

stadium in six years, when the “Police” last played there.

Rap albums hitting the pop album charts - The Beastie Boys’

“Paul’s Boutique” is in the top-25 as is “Walking With A Panther”

from LL Cool J. Also in the album top-100 - D.O.C’s “No One

Can Do It Better.” Both the Beastie’s album and D.O.C’s has a

sticker on front cautioning parents about language.

See it - “Club MTV Live… The Tour” - a live version of

the dance- music program hosted by Downtown Julie

Brown. With the show are Information Society, Was

(Not Was), Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul and Tone Luc. Word

has it that it’s been struggling to rack up strong ticket

sales. One bright spot and anticipation was for Mill

Vanilli- Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan. They re-enacted

the leaping high-fives from their videos and then pulled a

young female audience member on stage to deliver a

version of the new single “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You.”

More Radio news - Pirate Radio in Los Angeles vaults past KIIS AM/FM with a

5.4 share to KIIS’ 5.3. Rival Power-106 gets a 7.2. Mornings in Los Angeles -

Jay Thomas of Power 106 - 6.5, Rick Dees of KIIS - 6.6… Mark and Brian of

KLOS - 6.3 and Scott Shannon’s Pirate morning show - is up to a 4.2 from a 3.1.

New York - WPAT-AM/FM is in first place overall with a 5.9 while top-40 WHTZ

(Z100) gets a 5.5 Oldies WCBS-FM 4.7. Urban WRKS goes from a 4.1 to a 4.6.

WNEW-FM (AOR) is up to a 4.3. Top 40 WPLJ - 3.0. In Chicago - WBBM-FM -

4.0.

John Rook who joined talker KABC last November is gone. Magic Matt Alan

from Z-100 New York and VH-1 is now doing afternoons on KIIS-FM Los

Angeles. Longtime WLS Chicago personality John Records Landecker was

heard doing fill-in at Z100 New York with a lot of energy.

Entertainment news -

HBO which just took over the management of “Movietime,” says it will give the

channel an overhaul. “Movietime,” covers the movie industry. Movietime, which

launched two years ago, has mostly been a publicity device for the film industry

and has several personalities serving as hosts. It airs movie trailers interspersed

with celebrity interviews and Hollywood events. The channel is

Terry Murphy, former anchor at KCBS-TV Los Angeles, is named co-anchor of

the syndicated “Hard Copy” when it debuts in syndication next month.

Japan’s JVC/Victor Co. will invest more than $100 million in a new film company.

JVC is best known for developing the VHS videotape format.

Television news -

On “Saturday Night Live” - Tom Hanks is guest host with

musical guest Keith Richards.

CBS News says night news anchor Dan Rather will be

standing - not sitting beginning in the fall. CBS says it will

give the newscast a slightly graphic look.

New NBC show debuting this week - “FM” which is set at

a public radio station. Stars Robert Hays.

Passing - Amanda Blake (58) - best-known

as “Kitty” on the long-running series “Gunsmoke.” She died of oral and

throat cancer.
