killed when their Pakistani military plane exploded in the eastern part of the

country.

Republican convention - New Orleans -

Vice President George Bush , accepts

the Republican presidential nomination

and vows to build on President Reagan’s

record, but also pledged a more caring

and compassionate government.

President Reagan pays a visit to a giant

Republican Party salute to his wife in

New Orleans. The even was an official

farewell from the Republican Party to the first Lady.

More convention - At the Superdome, President Reagan tells his

vice president to “go out there and win one for the Gipper.”

Former Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater called the Republican

National Convention “the worst-organized, worst-run convention

I’ve ever been to,” and complained he couldn’t hear a word of

President Regan’s “Gipper” speech on Monday night. He did say

he was confident the party would win the presidential election.

Dan Quayle accepts the Republican vice

presidential nomination. “May this week have

asked, who is Dan Quayle? The people of Indiana

Know me and now the nation will.” … “And, as a

young man, I served six years in the National

Guard. And, like millions of Americans who have

served in the guard and serve today - I am proud

of it.”

In a heated outdoor news conference, Dan Quayle denied he joined the National

Guard in 1969 to avoid serving in the Vietnam War.

More Quayle - Dan Quayle defends his qualifications to be “a heartbeat away”

from the presidency and says there was “nothing to” a weekend that he and other

congressmen spent with a Washington lobbyist.

CDC estimates say that at the end of 1987 - between 900,000 ad 1.4 million

Americans were infected with HIV, which causes AIDS.

The last Pontiac produced in Pontiac, Michigan by General Motors rolls off the

assembly line, ending more than 60 years of auto production in this city.

About 40 beachgoers hit the water for… cash. Seems that a wad of cash washed

up at Westerly, RI.

A published Wall St. Journal report says a group of 27

employees of Drexel Burnham Lambert Inc including top

deal maker Michael Milken , owned a stake in the

arbitrage firm of Ivan F. Boesky, beginning in 1984. From

1984 to 1986 when the Drexel employee group held a

stake in Boesky’s operation, Boesky was Wall Street’s

most powerful take-over speculator and traded in many

stocks about which Drexel had valuable inside information.

Retail - The Walt Disney Entertainment conglomerate

says within the next four years, the company expects to

open at least 100 Disney Stores across the nation. The first Disney Store was

opened last year in Glendale, CA near Los Angeles. Since then, three others

have been added - in nearby Costa Mesa, San Francisco and Bridgewater, NJ.

The next store openings are planned for this

week in Torrance, CA and next week - Aug. 27

in Paramus, NJ. All are in malls.

Medical - the federal government gives

approval for the first time to an anti-baldness treatment that produced some hair

growth in four out of 10 men tested. “Rogaine” should be available in drugstores

within six weeks. The manufacturer is Upjohn Co of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Officials believe it could make a major dent in the lucrative “quack” market of

unproven drugs that claim to help hair growth.

In France, noted is the passing of Marseilles’ most infamous madam, Marie

Paoleschi - the last survivor of the port city’s once powerful gangland empire of

white-slave traders and drug peddlers. She was 82.

Passing - Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr. (74). Of lung cancer.

Sports - Art Rooney (87), the chairman and founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers,

is in critical condition with a paralyzed upper right arm after suffering a stroke.

Charles Barkley, the Philadelphia 76ers all-star forward, is arrested after state

police discovered a loaded handgun in his car while stopping him for speeding.

Butch Reynolds of Ohio sets the world 400-meter record in 43.29 seconds at a

Grand Prix track meet in Zurich, Switzerland.

Moses Malone , - a 1-time all-star and three-time

national Basketball Assn. MVP signs a 3-year contract

with the Atlanta Hawks for $4.67 million.

Radio news -

Shadoe Stevens debuts as host of its “American Top

40.” ABC is spending some $2 million on a national television campaign to

launch. Stevens will continue to occupy his regular spot on TV’s “Hollywood

Squares” while doing a multi-city tour.

Some stations are hailing a new kind of production tool - this one uses a

computer and stores commercials and other production elements such as jingles

in a hard drive. Stations such as KIIS-FM in Los Angeles are using the $450,000

Synclavier system, developed by New England Digital in Vermont. KIIS-FM

believes it will revolutionize the industry - well, at least the station.

WPIX-FM changes formats to smooth jazz (Aug 1).

Music news -

Brenda Lee - an unbelievable hit maker during the early

1960’s, files a $20 million suit against MCA alleging that the

label has underpaid royalties, failed to account for sales,

and licensed product without her permission.

People magazine is serializing Albert Goldman’s upcoming

controversial biography of John Lennon. This week,

Goldman says Lennon was indeed hooked on heroin. And

kicked the habit with the help of a sensory-deprivation tank,

just before work on his last album - “Double Fantasy.’

Bon Jovi’s “New Jersey” album is set for release on Sept. 19.

Jimmy Page will begin his first solo tour Aug. 31 in Tampa.
