A survivor of the fatal 747 crash in Japan last Monday said that about half an
hour before the jumbo jet slammed into a mountain with 524 people aboard, she
heard a loud “bam” sound overhead near the tail, the air in the cabin turned
„white” and parts of the ceiling collapsed. Soon after the first sign of trouble, the
plane began to say and weave wildly and went into „a steep descent.” It‟s
beginning to look like debris flew off the aircraft and hit the airplane‟s tail, causing
the plane to be uncontrollable.
A car bomb blows up in Tripoli, killing 50 in the fourth such attack in Lebanon in
four days.

AT&T announces it has eliminated about 24,000 jobs in its information systems
groups, about 20% of the work force in its computer ad business equipment arm.
In Miami - Jay Halaise, angered over his rejection by a woman in a singles bar,
felled several utility poles with a chain saw and plunged about 2,000 homes into
darkness.
The Rev. Sun Moon, the Korean evangelist who heads the Unification Church, is
released from a Brooklyn halfway house after serving 13 months of an 18-month
sentence for tax evasion.
Medical - The virus that causes AIDS has been discovered in the teardrops of a
patient suffering from the disease, according to researchers of the National

Ken Webb rejoins WBLS New York after two years of mornings on WRKS (Kiss).
WKTU changes calls to WXRK (K-rock) and is going rock against WNEW-FM.
The station has had promotion spots cut by recording artists saying, “Hello this
is… at K-Rock, New York‟s number two rock station, but not for long.” WNEW -
FM program director Charlie Kendell says if artists cut those promos, then they
don‟t need his station to pay their music (sour grapes).

Stereo TV update - Hardly any shows are broadcast with
stereo sound, but this week, NBC begins stereocasts of
“the Tonight Show” and “Late Night With David Letterman.”

sets made by Sony and Zenith in the past few years are “stereo-ready, but you
have to purchase an optional decoder. Some newer models of Beta HiFi VCR‟s
can pick up TV stereo, and need to be hooked to a stereo amplifier.

debuted last week - with mediocre ratings - a 10.5 rating and a
19 share and coming in third in its timeslot to NBC and ABC.
Dick Clark to debut another show - syndicated “Nitetime.” It will air on stations
against NBC‟s “Saturday Night Live.” Clark and a co-host, yet to be decided will
man the show. The format will include studio performances by two different
contemporary artists, a standup routine, a comedy improvisation by a four-
member in-house improv team, audience dancing to several current hits,
interviews and other features.
